Imagine a star system, Not Earth, where humans believed they evolved though dissenting scientist theorize that this is not the case. Eventually these humans begin to master space travel spread out into the system.

Time passes and they begin to reach the point of mastering FTL jump technology and weird things are happenning- ships mysteriously lost, prominent FTL scientist disappeared, and other thing the feed the conspiracy theorist mill.

The truth is that humanity did not evolve on this planet. They were brought here and their minds wiped with new memories implanted. The Manipulators have done this and they have an agenda the does not include humanity leaving their closed system and messing up their results. Humanity has become rats in a maze.

The PC's mission involves escaping the system. Discovering a way to overthrow the Manipulators. And reaching out to the stars.

EDIT: for some reason no one knows the dissenting scientist who question the establishment are called Gallileos.

 Cool Classic Cool
Reminds me of a few Amazing-Stories-from-Beyond-the-Shadows-of-the-Outer-Twilight shorts...
Oh humans!! Innocent We discover a galactic community filled with multiple species of aliens, and the first thing we think about is "how can we have sex with them?".

if you square a cube does it become an octoid?

Before Earth went BOOM to make way for a bypass that was the plot of Hitchhiker's Guide. Key points would be why are the Manipulators holding the humans? How are they restricting them? What is the Manipulators tech? Too powerful and the humans have no chance; too weak and they could not do what they did.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

For tech levels I would say make humans a little lower than Alpha Dawn and the manipulators around Star Trek level. Without knowing about them they are very powerful but once humanity learns about them measures can be taken to overcome limits that are in place.

Another point would be how many known about them. Are we talking X-files or Independance Day?

Hunter Prey... the humans had no chance, but the aliens will still loose... because it's in the script... Wink

Wouldn't worry about putting a strict limit like "Star Trek" (which seems to be rather low for the real drama impact of this scenario to me...), a large enough, advanced enough, and alien enough, culture has built in limitations to be exploited, even by the occasional 'lab-rat' with heroics on it's side...

To start no one would know about them them there would simply be mysteries to draw the PCs in Perhaps a secret society will turn up that has known, suspected, believed, for a long time. So I guess this would start X files ish but it could go ID.

It'll probably be helpful to map out the motive, agenda, methods and etc of the manipulators ahead of time; super detail isn't required but understanding what is going on behind the scenes will help in setting up the adventures.
