Here is a revised version with a leaner meaner look. Personally I like this version better

Doesn't the cannon rules state that atomic engines need to be mounted away from the hull?

BTW, I like the second one better too!

Some minor artistic license was taken to accomodate the parts of the model so everything fits. Keep in mind too that when it goes for prototyping that any negative space effects both the cost and complexity of the model. Too much negative space and the design will be rejected by the manufacturer. Also the engines on this model are mounted externally as described just the mounting struts are very short (perhaps a design imporvement in the last 25 years since when the cannon rules were written). It is also a time saver, to put in such a minute detail would add hours to the project and keep in mind I do this on my time completely unpaid. Yes, in a perfect world the mounts would be more visible but lets face it, in the cannon rules you have perhaps twenty different interpretations of what an assault scout looks like too. If you go by the Chit silhouette UPF Frigates and Destroyers only have one Engine mounting astern and no struts at all. Cruisers and Battleship have a central post that the small engine nacells are mounted on. In my classic SFKH design project I have labored to produce starship designs as true as possible to the original design specifications printed in the rules as possible or inspired by those original specifications. I have spent over $150.00 in purchasing textures and construction software add-ons to bring those designs to life. Each Designs represents a weekend, no not a few hours here and there, the entire weekend. So you have to understand when I say this with the utmost respect for our community and the cannon rules... does it really matter if the engines are next to the engineering hull or mounted on struts.

Me too AZ!!!!!
If you all only knew what we do on a day-to-day basis, financing, yada for the FS product.
I'm SO READY to play FS. heh.

I truly believe we are in the final stretch. Just a handful of items to consider and of course, art to pay for. And... we are now just scratching the surface for the setting. /me and overwhelmed at the moment!

Oops I said something that got a response I entirely did not intend.  Sorry if I hurt your feelings.  I was being analytical, not critical.  We have long discussed the inconsistencies of the star ship construction rules here in the forums and I was just seeking discussion.  In real life we do not put the reactors of nuclear powered vessels on struts away from the ship.  There is strong history in the SF artwork and lead figures for atomics mounted next to the hull.

I really appreciate the effort you are putting into these designs.  I know the time it takes to do a solid model from my engineering life.  Add to that the texture and artwork that we do not do in an engineering solid model and I can easily see the time you are putting in.

Again please accept my apologies.  I was not meaning to criticize.

I will say that I've never been a fan of Miniatures myself, But I do appreciate good craftsmanship, and sometimes looking at a good model can spark all sorts of interesting ideas. I think that the prototypes that Az has put up here are awesome, and show a great deal of dedication to this hobby of ours. So I tip my hat to AZ and hope to see this project bloom into something awesome.

Things like these miniatures are a great way to lure people to the revival, so by all means keep up the great work.

btw, I am not offended and my feelings arent hurt, I am only explaining that it is a huge monumental effort to produce these projects and that little deviations sometimes have to be overlooked in favor of the spirit of the endeavor. I always welcome positive and negative feedback. I just want people to understand that little details are sometimes impossible to emulate or implausible to change.

But I am honestly fed up with sticking to such a narrow canonincal "blue print". I do love SF but trying to reproduce twenty five year old pen and paper designs in a digial age is taxing

Totally understood. Plus you want to produce things you own. :-)
