Ok, I was discussing some minature designs with Woot and Jedion a couple of days ago. I am in discussion with a rapid prototyping company that can convert my designs into plastic 3d objects. Well here is the good news, most of my Dark Tempest models convert with complete compatibility and at reasonable costs to produce. Bad News, my new designs created for the classic SFKH starship design project are not compatible the models are too complicated with way too many polygons for the machine to 3d print into plastic. So, I will attempt to dumb them down over the next couple of months to get a low polygon version that they can convert. I will keep everyone posted but at least some of my projects can be built.

Here are some other mini's that i can work on in the future and some realistic expectations on what is possible. Character mini's will be in 25mm but I probably could do 15mm too if desired.

Human Male Spacer - Yep: Can Do!
Human Female Spacer - Yep: Can Do!
Dralasite Figure: Yep: Can Do!
Yaz Figure: Maybe: There Are Some Limitations Here
Sathar Figure -  Sorry, Can't be Done With My Software At This Time
Vrusk Figure -  Highly Unlikely: I Can Come Close With My Software But Will Take A Huge Effort.
Robots - Yep, Can Do: I can make a large variety of Robots
Power Armor: I May Be Able To Put Together Some Decent Power Armor For Humans
Pirates - Yep, Can Do: As Long As They Fit The Previously Mentioned Approved Character Races.

Alien Monsters: I Don't have any classical SF alien monsters but I can certainly make a whole lot of new and interesting ones.

Ground Vehicles: Yes They Can Be Done, But At 25mm They Would Be Very Very Expensive Models.

Those 3-D renderings look very good.  Did you design those with CAD, AZ?  If so, good job.  I look forward to seeing the final result.  They should look amazing all painted up.

Last weekend I picked up some acrylic paint at Michaels and decided to start painting one of the prototype Mini's. The paint is very basic and nothing fancy to write home about. I am using a Silver coat as the base. No Primer was needed and the first coat adhered like a dream. Not to say that primer would hurt at all but definitely isnt necessary. The Silver paint from Michael's is a little sparkly for my taste but it will do on my non existant budget. The paint didn't gum up the details which was a concern at the smaller 15mm scale. I am now trying a light black wash to try and age the look a little and dim down the silver.

15mm is a very popular scale right now for sci-fi. If you were to do a line of 15mm Star Frontiers inspired figs, you would capture a good chunk of cross-market sales from folks looking for interesting figs for their own 15mm projects.

Finished the first paint job will post pics soon, very basic nothing too dramatic. I am looking for something to seal the finished paint job thought, any suggestion on a good sealer for acrylic paint.

New ships for Knight Hawks-awesome! How do I order these from you? Regarding PC figs,i wouldn't worry too much about humans in 15mm, there are lots of companies making those! I can undestand why a Vrusk would be a pain with all those legs.... I'd be a little flexible regarding what 15mm actually means. These days a 15mm fig is about 18mm tall. Have you considered doing avrusk that has a more solid base, with the legs as more ofa suggestion, than actual individual and free satanding limbs? It may make casting them a lot easier! I think vehicles in the port loren scale would be cool, but to be honest, I think the chits work fine. On a smaller scale map where one square equals 2 meters, a some appropriately sized vehicles would be very handy!

The silver paint has a reflective quality to it so it has a different appearance in different lighting. As you can see even at the tiny 15mm size a lot of detail can be seen in the model when painted. If you are not familiar with 15mm to give you an idea most of the details had to be painted in with a tooth pick or needle point. For the base coat I used a small detail brush and for the black wash and dry bushing i used a small painting brush like the ones found in the old testors kits.

Prototypes were made, sorry the pics here don't do them justice. I made prototypes for both 15mm and 25mm. However it became apparent that no one wanted to buy them. As described in the thread, the problems lies in the shipping from my French supplier. If the items are ordered in larger quantities the prices are much much more reasonable. If they are ordered one at a time they range around 10-15 dollars per mini due to the $6.00 international shipping. However if I order 10 then thats only .60 per mini on the shipping as the price of the parcell doesnt change. If I order 100 its .12 per mini. and the prices drop down considerably per unit. Anyway, what it boiled down to is that people in the community didn't order so I didn't pursue the project any further than making the prototypes.

AZ_Gamer, I thank you for a quick reply.

I am sorry to hear that the communityis currently unable to support an order.

I wonder if this is something that could be done "at home"? per say.
I know that years ago I had purchased some stock metal and I had a few
molds of AD&D minitures that xyz company sold with the metal as a kit.
With this kit I could make my own metal minitures.

I guess is this something where the "community" could have molds made or
could the "community" make their own molds and then simply cast, make its own minitures
and sell them? Either in metal or in the newer plastics that seem so popular?

There is this link here http://www.starfrontiers.us/node/1777#comment-27722
where a member was making plastic minitures on his own it seemed.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the interest I may do some more with this later but for right now I have shelved the project until I have the time and money to take another look at it.

Spyder produces a lot of great minis and I purchased several items from his line of reproduction mini's and they are very good.

I personnally am not interested in purchasing and producing from home made plastic mold or metal mold mini's at this time. Foremost I don't have the time or space to endeavor on such a work intensive undertaking. It's cheaper then using the laser cut rapid prototyping but the fuss and muss is very minimal and the prices are fair. The only problem is that shipping really jacks up the price and the larger the size of the mini the more costly the mini.

When I have the time to finish my game design project called Space Fleet Commander (A knight hawks style spaceship combat board game) I will be making miniatures for that game system. But I am still a long way from a publication date.

Great project idea for a Kickstarter.
