Yazirian Honor Code and Philosophy

Yazirians Honor Code

Dieing without overcoming your life-enemy is dishonorable.
Morn the Disinherited, for they are wayward and pathless.
Respecting another brothers path is respecting your own.
The needs of the clan outweigh the needs of the one.
The path to complete defeat is allowing a life-enemy sanction.
Rituals are the blood that binds us together.

Yazirian Proverbs

If you don't get the joke, its probably about you.
Grumpiness is a virtue.
Violence is the means to an end.

Yazirian Proverb:
Sometimes if you want the fruit, you have to go out on a limb.

It speaks to a risk taking and going for a reward. I may have gotten this one off a TV show but I like it for the yaz
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Yazirian Codes

Let no insult go unpunished
Bow not before thine enemy
To die for a foolish cause is to dishonor thy clan
To ignore thy enemy is to do him service
Repay all debts of kindness with kindness, and all debts of vengeance with vengeance
Your word is your bond, so take care before giving it
A wise warrior understands that retreat is not an act of cowardess, Only a fool stands fast against overwelming odds
A warrior has many faces, one for his friends, one for his clan, and one for his enemies
"Hey guys I wonder what this does"-Famous last words
"Hey guys, I think it's friendly." -Famous last words
"You go on ahead, I'll catch up." -Famous last words
"Did you here that?" -Famous last words

Honor without righteousness is dishonor.
Always give a greater gift than the one you just received, even if it takes years to do so.
A poor Clan with honor is worth a thousand rich Clans in dishonor.
Never choose another Clan as your life enemy.
The poorest member of your Clan is the measure of your entire Clan's wealth.
Tradition is Yaziran meat, ritual is Yazirian drink.
A warrior who does not contemplate is an unworthy savage.
There is but one opportunity to correct ignorance, after that, it is stupidity.
Anger is best addressed by peace.
The past of your Clan is remembered for many reasons.  Know them all.
Clan Heroes must be celebrated forever.  To forget a Clan Hero is to forget your Clan.
The future of your Clan is secured by its eldest member and its history is honored by its youngest.
The Disinherited deserve an honest hearing.  Remember the unjustly Disinherited Heroes.
When the whole Clan meets, slay the most delicious beasts and open the finest wines.  Celebrate!
When you touch another, part of your soul passes into them.
A great warrior without ceremony, poetry, and song is not great at all.
The strong fight bravely, but only the strongest forgive.
Keep your heart and mind open, but also keep your sword sharp.

Let your young bleed that they might learn.  Heal them that you may be one.
Listen to your quietest elder.
Save a stranger, gain a friend.  Save an enemy, loose and enemy.  Forget a friend, gain an enemy.

The Imperial Lord has weighed in and demonstrated why he is called the Imperial Lord

Great Post.

If I may humbly suggest a few modifications:

Honor without righteousness is dishonor. Honor without righteousness is no honor. - sounds older that way.
Always give a greater gift than the one you just received, even if it takes years to do so.
A poor Clan with honor is worth a thousand rich Clans in dishonor.
Never choose another Clan as your life enemy. Or Maybe phrase it as: The foolish choose another clan as a life enemy.
The poorest member of your Clan is the measure of your entire Clan's wealth.
Tradition is Yaziran meat, ritual is Yazirian drink. This is an interesting statement and I'll adress it latter.
Restate:Clan Heroes must be celebrated forever.  To forget a Clan Hero is to forget who you are.
The future of your Clan is secured by its eldest member and its history is honored by its youngest.
The future of your Clan is secured when its eldest member and history is honored by its youngest.
The above is an interesting statement and I'll adress that with the meat and drink comment as well.
I'd perfer this one as: A great warrior without ceremony, poetry, and song is a tragic hero. A dutiful youth learns the old songs.
The strong fight bravely, but only the strongest forgive. This is very good.
Keep your heart and mind open, but also keep your sword sharp.

RE: Tradition is Yaziran meat, ritual is Yazirian drink.- this begs the question, What is yaz tradition and ritual.
RE: The future of your Clan is secured by its eldest member and its history is honored by its youngest.
The future of your Clan is secured when its eldest member and history is honored by its youngest.
Statements like this almost guarentee that yazirian culture is repleat with scenes of a ritual or tradition being performed and the youngest or the youngest over the age of accountability lead the ritual in some significant way; similar to some Jewish traditions were a young child plays an important role in a ritual. Its a powerful way pass on tradition to the next generation.

Just to put a little flavor to jedion's excellent adjustments...

Song and poetry are key elements to the celebration of great deeds.  In some cases, the hero in question will actually hire someone else to compose the most rhythmic and poetic dedication to their acheivement, if they themselves don't have the talent to do so.

Thus the Yazirian Hero is truly remembered, not only through their contibution to the Clan, but also because they composed a true work of art, one that stands on its own artistically, which in some cases is even greater then the deed itself!

And the Clan elders' eyes water and they nod and applaud with pride - not only from the heroism and acheivement, but also from the celebration of it.  The Yazirians add beauty and magnificence and rhythm to their courage and acumen.

Sounds like bards and minstrels have a place in Yaz society.

perhaps that warrents a new arch type?

A Warrior Bard/ Mercenary Minstrel

and also leads to a discussion of musical instruments among the Yaz- drums are a no brainer, you'd think that with their long fingers and extra knuckles that their woodwinds and stringed instruments would be extremely difficult for other races to pick up. and the sound/ music style from these ethnic instruments would be an acquired taste like bagpipes- people who like them usually love them and those that dont usually hate the sound.

Yes, definitely.  Their paws do indeed allow for all sorts of musical instrument playing and talent in those areas.

Music is certainly part of the richness of their celebration.  Maybe even some bawdy or ribaldric songs after the consumption of bottles of their favorite wines...

After all, maybe there are some heroes that they only talk/sing about among themselves...

"You can shave my mane from my dead body."
applicable anytime someone wants to take something from you, or in general situations, where you are implying that a person is a murderous thief.
can cause the recipient of the insult to battle rage. (sometimes that is advantageous)

Notes from Doog Luos's Intro to Yazirian Philosophy class, Zebulon University, Ankor, Zebulon system

In the Human Bible there is a classic statement that is a paramount theological statement to its message as a whole, "Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sins."

In Yaz philosophy there is a parallel statement, "Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of shame!"
For the yazirian, honor is paramount and shame and dishonor can only be expunged through the shedding of blood, usually his own but not always.

During the age of the clan wars the usual method for a shamed yazirian to be restored in the eyes of his clan involved a pre-charge into combat. In other words the shamed yazirian charged an opposing clan while  his clan looked on. The usual result was his death with the restoration of his honor. A good death on the part of the shamed could result with inciting battle rage en mass by his entire clan which would almost inevitably have a significant impact on the immenent battle and would cement the dead yazirians name in the songs and legends of his clan. There are rare occassions where a yazirian fought and defeated opponent after opponent till his clan mates could stand the site no longer and impetuously charged to the aid of their shamed clan mate and he survived the ordeal to personally enjoy the restoration of his honor.

The yazirian practice of gliding duels with zamra's is another example of expunging shame by shedding of blood.

Pride and Honor are strong drink indeed.
But pride that leads to boasting sours honor.
When honor has been mixed with boasting it can only be recovered with the same difficulty as unmixing two wines from one glass.

Do not sing your own praise, sing that of your companion.

EDIT: I love the seen in Arnolds Conan when his companion is crying and the old man asks him why and he says of Conan, "He's Sumerian, he cannot cry so I cry for him." at the funeral of the blond chick.

"Those that truly understand Yazirians appreciate when their songs are about them.  Those that don't are foolish to express their dislike of the songs."

Saying often quoted to annoying Dralasites by Yazirians and attributed to Mol Flathead, Mol Limbless, Mol Maimed, and the like.

"Three principles form as the basis of our approach to life: search for the truth, work hard, and respect every form of life." ~ Excerpted from The Journals of The Colonial Copontif of One; Kajh Grr'hl Tza'gan - As found in the modern historical book entitled; The Founding Colonial Patrons of Yast.

["...Etched into a scroll tube of pure, and long-lived materials, and long debated origions ... reads an account of some ancient sacred relics, woven of vines into a preserved tapestry map, that may show mountains, rivers and jungle, but is in reality, a depiction of a place in the etheric world. Here in an arial land of "firm-clouds" the spiritual Masters live as the keepers of the tradition and the culture, as the keepers of the secret wisdom..." Many copies, and perhaps some surviving tapestries exist. Oddly however the maps on these relics correspond to fit perfectly with the planetary systems around Athor as a primitive representation of a star-map of rhe region around the Yreva Nebula. yet it is much older than life on Hentz, and even the Interstellar Era of Yazi Civilization.] ~ Claimed in some Athor core-net document, to be excerpted from The 'Secret' Journals of The Colonial Copontif of One; Kajh Grr'hl Tza'gan - and further editorialized with commentary by the site author about the true place of Yazirian People as one of the Galactic Tetrarchs, and offered along with 'proofs' that the Church of One attempts to enslave Yazi-kind at the whim of the Council of Xenomasters(The Frontier Council on Prenglar)...

Found this quote, sounds yaz to me:

"Dying with yours hands on an enemy's throat is better than living under his boot." --John Edgar Wideman _Brothers and Keepers_

EDIT: plus these look to be usable:

"Summum crede nefas animam praeferre pudori et propter vitam vivendi perdere causus."
"Count it the greatest sin to prefer mere existence to honour, and for the sake of life to lose the reasons for living." --Juvenal

"War spares not the brave but the cowardly." --Anacreon

"I would rather suffer defeat than have cause to be ashamed of victory." --Quintus Curtius

"He lived his life to the very end." --Unknown

"I am Aragorn son of Arathorn; and if by life or death I can save you, I will." --Aragorn, _Fellowship of the Ring_ by J.R.R. Tolkien

PS:
"Every Yaz dies, but every Yaz does not die having defeated his life enemy."
"I came here to do two things: Chew rocca root and kick ass... and I'm all out of rocca root."
