jedion357 April 6, 2010 - 8:39pm | All I know is that old TSR miniatures have to be based on a 2 inch hex for the big ships because their real lead and so big. This site might be of help to you though: http://www.merzo.net I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

TerlObar April 7, 2010 - 7:47am | I only have the Sathar ship set (Sathar Frigate, LC and HC + 2 pirate Assault Scouts and Pirate Frigate) but I can comment on those. The measured sizes of the minis are: Assault Scouts - 25-26mm Frigates - 51 mm LC - 85mm HC - 138mm giving a ratio of 1:2:3.25:5.5 Based on the sizes listed in the KH Campaign Manual, using the average length for a given hull size, and using the smaller hull sizes for the LC and HC, the ratios are 1:2:6:9 (its 1:2:7:10 with the larger HS). So I'd say the smaller ships are to scale but the larger ships are too small relative to the smaller ones. Which is not surprising as that would take a lot of lead to really make them to scale and they be even bigger and heavier than they are. Ad Astra Per Ardua! Which is not surprising as that would take a lot of lead to really make them to scale and they be even bigger and heavier than they are. True, most miniature wargames alter the scale in an abstract way to make things easier. Using the silhouette profile (counting each square as 0.5cm, or 5m of area) in the KH Campaign Book, I find: Fighter: 10mm Assault Scout: 30mm Frigate: 50mm Destroyer: 60mm Light Cruiser: 120mm Heavy Cruiser: 160mm Assault Carrier: 170mm Battleship: 200mm The battleship alone would be 8 inch long and over an inch thick! That would weigh down the table, and put the other players in fear! (not to mention all the stupid phallic jokes) Going with the above sizes, a 3" or 5" hex map would be ideal (even though most of the larger ships would overlap). Don't forget that in the normal rules, 1 hex = 10,000km. Even with the scaled miniatures overlapping into other hexes, the ships have a lot of space (pun intended) in their little hex area. Knocking the scale down to 1 hex = 1,000km (1 turn = 1 minute) is also possible, and good if you what something closer to the RPG scale. |
