WOTC Red Box Set

Found this over at Dragonsfoot, looks like a rehash of the Mentzer basic set from the 1980s. Can Star Frontiers be close behind?

I see the d20 system just a updated Gurps/Champions systems. I've played D20 AD&D and Cthulhu, and had a blast because of the DM, the character creation process was what reminded me of the above.

I'll never play 4th, I tried it and thought to myself, if I wanted to play Warcraft I'd go home and log on. ( I finally got that monkey off my back and been Wow free for a year and a half!)

But I truely do think it's the DM and his skill that make great games.

I have the most fun with the level 1-6 games and honestly could play level 2-3 games until drawing my last breath, to me the greatest reward is surviving level 1!

AMEN!

Oh hell yeah!!  I can agree there.
On a side note, Awhile back I was pointed to a forum (that I have long lost) where some gamers working with the 3.5 d20 put a level cap in.  What level could that be?  Why level 6 it is.
All hit point, saves, attacks, stopped at level 6 on the charts.  Every so many xp after that, 1500ish maybe 2000, the player got to pick a perk.  So hit points, saves, defense, spells, etc could still increase through that route.
The forum had comments from the gm and several of his players. It sounded like the players really liked it. It forced a bit more teamwork and tactics.  Not so many wanted to go off alone anymore.  At the same time, there wasnt anymore guessing at npc levels, because they knew where the cap was at, but the perks kept it challenging. At 6th level, a single solid hit can still drop a sturdy fighter. And suddenly nobody actively hunted for dragons...

It sounded like alot of fun. I never did get the chance to try it.  But for a bit, there was a spark of interest in d20 D&D again for me.

Calle E6 (never played it myself, although it does sound interesting.)

One of the threads on it (first post has a lot of info on it and links)

We (RPGA) had 4 copies of the Red Box at GenCon. They were guarded before, after and during play. You weren't allowed to take pictures of the box, insides or nothing.  A very large display showed a poster of Larry Elmore on a motorcycle pumping his fists, the other side was a behind-glass view of the Red box and a view of some contents.

My wife has said she would play. But she is a nerd like me. I chose my mate wisely.

The wife unit and I play middle-earth fantasy games. Besides gaming we have been working on adventures and maps for a game called Labyrinth Lord. We hope to publish some of them. :-)

Oh.. and I'm getting the Red Box and having it signed by Larry Elmore next time I see him. :-P
Here are the contents;

I'll also purchase the Dungeon Master Kit boxed edition. And perhaps Lamentations of a flaming princess. I love boxed sets. I want to make one myself someday. Wife unit says if I print the box cover image she can order and make boxes.

My wife works at Wal-mart and came home today to tell me they are now selling the 4th ed box set that looks like the Classic Mentzer Basic Set. She said its not in the game section, instead its with the as seen on tv stuff.

I popped into my friendly neighborhood Wally World on the way home from work tonight, didn't see it in either section. But it seems to be trickling into the market nonetheless.

Kind of like SF miniatures being sold at Sears.

Well I still haven't found this. It's supposed to be in the CCG area and I've yet to see CCG at WalMarts here (they used to have them a few years ago but I've not seen them in a while). I'm told Target might have it though.

Anyone else actually seen this set yet?
