Refer to: Corsair Container.

Reading the descriptive text I would think this container could be used as a one-time drop ship.
Possibilities include;
  • Deliver cargo to outpost, container becomes a shelter or parts for a shelter.
  • Deliver supplies. Drop container is re-lifted to space.
  • Drop toops in hostile area.

How do you drop the container?

Landed by shuttle?
By an attached thurster unit?
By Parachute?
By Woot!!!!

I've been thinking about the "ads" on the back cover of the SFman- one had drop building.
I was wondering what they'd look like.
I think a cylinder container designed to be attached to a KH style ship would work- each cylinder would have circular deck in line to take advantage of the 1g of gravity while the ship was under accelleration and when landed the cylinders would stand on end since the decks are arranged that way. You could arrange a number of these containers in a close group and ship in horizontal tunnels to connect them on the level where the connection to the freighter's central core was made sort of like elevated walkways. could even have an air lock module that that would be attached a base of a cylinder if they were used in hazardous environment.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

An extended version of the Elanor Mores? Cylinder with Ion/Chemical engines attached to sides, struts would extend down to hold the cylinder upright.

Love the ideas.

For the Drop troops I can imagine 4 assault ships secured to a central cylinder. They are hidden by the ordinary looking container. The container is dropped from orbit, comes howling down to the planet and suddenly splits into four parts - each blown away by charges. Then the assaults ships release and the fun begins.

Sounds like something I saw in Serenity RPG - Work Horse & Shire Horse // Light Cargo Haulers.
The Work Horse looks like the CU-37 but it carries one connex (1 unit) underneath. The Shire Horse carries two connexs.

In Robotech they had the Horizont combat shutle. It carried two bunkers - one under each wing.

I think a combination of parachute, heat shield and a thruster unit should safely get a cargo container down from orbit. Might even pair a robotic brain with the equipment attached to the container so that it manages the thrust module which gives it some control of the landing zone and allows the robotic brain to choose the exact thrust profile for optimum safe landing. Its largely a disposable system and far cheaper than tying up a million credit, or more, traditional shuttle or lander and its crew.

Yes, but it cannot be reused. The shuttle can.Cool

No arguement on that but a HS2 ship, by the rules, will price out at a million and requires infrastructure and support systems to operate. Whereas all of the stuff for attaching to the drop container would costs at best 20,000 and maybe at worst 30,000. Its ideal for setting up a base on an unexplored planet, dropping supplies into a dangerous situation where you would not want to rist a shuttle and etc.

Its not better than a shuttle its just an effective tool in addition to a shuttle. The TV show Earth 2 show this sort of thing in the pilot episode which was mad cool as they released the cargo containers in the middle of an emergency and when they got down they had to search for them to get their supplies (shades of Crash on Volturnus) I absolutely loved that show right up till when they discontinued it back in the day.

EDIT: also I like the idea of allowing the PCs to salvage rocket feul, parachutes, and robotic parts from this equipment much like some of the salvage of equipment that went on in the beginning of the Eleanor Mores mod.

I agree with you nd concede that point.

The Work Horse and Shire Horse were used in places with high traffic. So those would be plentiful in places like Prenglar and Cassidine. You could even have transport companies with dozens of shuttles and pilots that ferry cargo back and forth.

There could even be freelancers that live in their shuttle or apartment and do it for a price...

"Our Ifshnit Trader Captain knows this freelancer on Triad that will ferry our cargo to the planet for half the price and a bottle of Yazirian ale."
