jedion357 October 25, 2009 - 1:08pm | Here it is I was working on some adventure ideas for zine submission and I was stealing basic ideas from some classic Sci-fi movies. It seems if I was going to rip off classics then Forbidden planet should be in the mix. Yet I was just stymied as to what to do with its premise. So lets see if the community can come up with to flesh out the adventure. Forbidden Moon: The latest class of rescue scout is dispatched to rescue a stranded scientific expedition on an inhabitable moon. The scientist are keeping a secret about an awakened danger that could destroy them all. Thats it. thats the kernal that I came up with. It needs an adventure outline and flesh to hang on the frame work after coming up with that I went writers block and to be honest I didn't really come up with that. lets see what we can do with this as a community. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Rum Rogue October 25, 2009 - 5:54pm | I am in the process of putting together a short adventure with a similar theme. I am debating on starting it off as a supply run or rescue job to an isolated arctic facility. Do to deteriorating ice shelf that the station is located on the ship cannot land near it. So the team must drive an explorer 10k across a glacier. Long slow drive do to the broken terrain and a nasty storm in the area. The storm forces the ship to go to orbit about an hour into the trip and overtakes the team long before they reach the facility. The storm also knocks out communications. With the last few reports being updates about the size and duration of the storm and a final message from the facility about them "buttoning up for the storm." The team cannot just wait it out as they have a limited life-support, 10-12 hours, and the drive will take about 8-10 hours depending on navigation and terrain problems. Once they get to the destination, the place is closed up tight, and no one is answering the comm or the door. Time flies when your having rum. Im a government employee, I dont goof-off. I constructively abuse my time. |
Ascent October 25, 2009 - 7:10pm | I see Rum Rogue edited his post with an opener. Anyway, this is mine. Go for the supply run since Jedion is going for the rescue job. This will help in my MedLab Campaign book. I'll try to work on some rescue procedure ideas. You'll need a medic, a body guard, and an explorer. Since the scout ship is of import, they should have a KH scenario as they approach the planet. They should also not crashland unless they fair badly in battle. A flyover reveals a crash site, but after landing they find no one but two mutilated bodies of people who didn't survive the crash. Closer examination reveals that the lascerations on the bodies were made paramortem by a creature of some sort. The party finds an indicator of what direction the survivors went. After traveling a little ways in that direction, they find an area where there are many footprints from various sapients, not as if traveling, but as if in a struggle. Inspection reveals a trail of something being dragged behind a small caravan from the site of the foot steps in a different direction from where they came. On the way, the person who succeeds a perception check hears a faint cry of someone calling out for help, coming from a nearby precipice. The party must exercise their rescue skills to retreive the man with a broken leg and dehydrated who is mumbling something about being ambushed and "they took them. Oh God. They took them!". After he is rescued, he tells them what happened to his party in more detail and tells about the creature that caused them to crash land. I'll let someone else take over from there. That's the opener that came to mind. View my profile for a list of articles I have written, am writing, will write. "It's yo' mama!" —Wicket W. Warrick, Star Wars Ep. Rum Rogue October 25, 2009 - 6:29pm | Yeah I went off on a tangent. sorry about that. I should go watch Forbidden Planet again. But from what I remember Ascent has the grasp of it. I like what you did there. Very nice. Time flies when your having rum. Im a government employee, I dont goof-off. I constructively abuse my time. |

The scientist are keeping a secret about an awakened danger that could destroy them all. Ask questions of the above to start providing meat for the adventure.
You don't have to answer in depth, that can be done later. Once the questions are answered you have a list of events and can start building the adventure. Was this helpful? I can flesh it out more if you want. |
Ascent October 25, 2009 - 7:22pm | I think we can blend a little of Rum's idea with mine. Perhaps it's not a crashed ship, but a damaged lab, or maybe a crashed space station. (That would be more original.) Perhaps the storm can be a rain storm with high turbulance, challenging the pilot's skills. Perhaps, too, the crash sight is amidst cavernous shelves, thus the landing problem. View my profile for a list of articles I have written, am writing, will write. "It's yo' mama!" —Wicket W. KH encounter coming in is good but maybe one easy to evade but then left in abayence till they go to lift off then make it very serious touch and go KH encounter. I love the crashed space station idea if not for this then for something else. Question is it possible to have a KH encounter that is environment based as opposed to white hats and black hats in space? The only current environmental hazards that I know of are asteroids and black holes both are avoidable. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

Ascent October 26, 2009 - 3:01pm | I prefer to think of it the other way around. I will be revisiting the minor hull sizes with the info gathered from the community chat last year, using decimals. It will still be that one spaceship hull point has a value comparable to 10 structure points, and 1 structure point (modified for a vehicle/wall gradient between character and spaceship. Instead of 500 sp, it would be 50 sp.) has a value comparable to 10 sentient STA. Thus, for a character to do any significant damage to a spaceship, they have to do at least 100 points of sentient-level damage, which is 1 hp damage to a spaceship, or else the damage has no effect. Inside a ship, I see as a different story. The walls within a ship are not reinforced for space flight (only its superstructure and hull are) and therefore use structural points. That's my take, at least. View my profile for a list of articles I have written, am writing, will write. "It's yo' mama!" —Wicket W. Warrick, Star Wars Ep. Oghma October 27, 2009 - 5:31pm | This sounds very much like an "Aliens" type of scenario. I've always wanted to do one of those in a campaign. |
jedion357 January 25, 2010 - 2:27pm | Its been 12 weeks and to be honest this slipped my mind. However, the "menace that could destroy us all" was barely defined and stories without a great antagonists usually stink. anyway umungus got me thinking with something he emailled me in a project we're working on that actually inspired be for the menace. So I've been back through the thread to injest everyone's ideas and I'm working on this to get a full fledge adventure published in the zine. So... Any other ideas to consider? How exactly would a space station crash land on a planet? How badly damaged would it be? Would it be able to be explored? I agree with Ascent that a crashed space station is more original and actually catches my interest more then, "Oh another crashed ship?" (Do fantasy characters ever say, "Oh another dungeon.") At any rate the bottom line for the gas giant and moon is that the moon needs to have a period where it would lose communication due to storms or something - I was thinking that when the gas giant eclypses the star that servre weather forces the science station to button up and this would cause the rescue ship to lose contact. I suppose the reason doesn't really matter why this happens just need it to happen- any suggestions? In a variety of theories about how moons are made loose material just collects and forms a moon could an alien space station orbiting a gas giant in an elipse that allows it to pass through the outer edge of the gas giant collect material that would freeze on it and over time amass enough material to be a small moon? This would give us the "crashed" space station and the period when the moon passes through the gas giant's outer layers causes communication to be loss as the resulting storm is bad news. This actually would make the moon uninhabitable and require pressure suits plus being out side for the pass through would be very bad for those doing so. This situation would/could necessitate the classic Star Frontiers ploy (pre KHs) of the PCs get dropped off and will be picked up latter as a ship wont want to hang around for the pass through. Does this sound workable if not believable for a setting? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
w00t (not verified) January 25, 2010 - 11:02pm | Does this sound workable if not believable for a setting? Absolutely. Suspend realism sciency stuff for imagination and adventure! I love the idea. Perhaps when objects pass through the ring or outer atmosphere it coats everything. :-) |

ArtMic January 27, 2010 - 7:15pm | a crashed space station is the opening of MD Giest, it has potential, but it would destroy everything in a certain radius, and it could trigger massive earthquakes if it lands on a fault line. if it lands in water it would cause them nice huge waves and you could have an adventure ala sphere. Gold is for the mistress-silver for the maid-copper for the craftsman cunning at his trade. But Iron-Cold Iron- is master of them all |

OI! an undersea adventure filled with creatures of the deep, a new race of merepeople, danger of loosing power and air on the station while its submerged and no land for 10km! Island 10km away is filled with dinosa... nah.. uhm. A volcano that is on the brink of exploding due to the sudden temp drop from the wave... and Marlo Brandywine from Bucksberry Falls has been stranded here for the last tenday. he's not sure what happened but one moment he's enjoying Old Toby, the finest weed in the Southfarthing and the next he sitting on an island surround by the Big Deep! oh ya. its all coming together now. |
