Just discovered this little gem as a model at the hobby store then looked it up on the web:

never heard of personal flying platforms like this before.

I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Yeah, the American military expirimented with all sorts of crazy contraptions as these during the Fifties and Sixties, including several attempts at a jet pack.

The Williams X-Jet, along with a couple similar platforms, have been on display for years at the Air Force National Museum at Wright-Pat; I remember seeing the X-Jet and, I believe the XF-85 Goblin, there when I was 13.

EDIT: Corrected the name of the museum and the Goblin's designation.

I've never seen any of those. That's cool. Flying saucers, anyone? Add a couple of miniature jets on the back and you could have the ones commonly witnessed. Add guns, and you have an awesome weapon.

So now I know what H. Beam Piper meant when he mentioned "airjeeps" in the Fuzzy books.

I picked up a model of the "Apollo 27 rocket" I'm assuming its based off a concept drawing only but I thought it might look nice as a center piece to storming the Pirate town or a second launch facility on volturnus.

aside for 4 chemical engines depicted I think that it looks quite good- of course we could just say that those 4 small engines really represent on class A chemical engine.

Figure with my modeling experience it should eat up a lazy Sunday afternoon.

to fiddle with for a gantry

I'm now tempted to pick up an old school cylon raider to be a mechanon fighter craft if the above project works well Though I suspect that I could track down a cylon raider on the paper model sharing websites and then could do up 4-5 for a nice tacticle scenario of hold off the sathar to give the mechies time to launch their fighters for some air cover during the battle for volturnus.
