I got stuck at Plattsburgh NY for 9.5 years which meant going to school with basically the same people from 3rd grade thru Junior. One of the Col. who put on his star for general after commanding plattsburgh liked the job Dad was doing and kept him at the base that long though that is not typical for the AF
But eventually we were shipped off to Mildenhall England just in time for Dad to participate in the AFs little fly down to Libya for a little "How do" with Kadaffy. Funny thing happened to Dad after nearly 4 years in England and he had orders for Forida: Gen. Searock walked into his shop and said, "Sgt. what are you doing here?" Dad says, "Well, general, I'm just clearing out, I'm leaving for FL in a few week." "No you're not. Lt. get this mans SS# hes going to Plattsburgh, I've got a job for him to do there." All told Dad spent 11.5 years stationed at Plattsburgh out of a 27 year carreer.

None the less thats where I got hooked on D&D (b/x boxes & AD&D), SF, Car Wars, Ogre (not so much), and Star Fleet Battles, tried out TS but never got to make a character for Boothill.  I dragged my friends along to a D&D tourny run buy some adult at a community center. something like 20 11-14 yr old kids registered and it was about 1 hr for 4 weeks and cost $10 each. It was set up as a small group of us defending a castle and the rest attacked it.- not your classic adventure but he cleard $200 for 4 hours work and the seige never got fully resolved.

As I remember we basically played D&D a lot with other things mixed in till I got totally hooked on vehicle combat with Car wars then Star Fleet Battles.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Oh, wow, so Jedi and Shadow, your folks were in fighters. As what, pilots, aircrew, or ground crew?(I assume Jedi's Dad worked F-111s in some form, as he participated in the bombing of Libya).

Trivia: Jedi's family was stationed at the same base where fellow AF brats America first formed their band....

Kadena AB, by any chance? Had some friends with the former 19th ARW who served there on detached duty some years back.

Did someone mention SFB? One of three favorite boardgames(Battle Fleet Gothic and Full Thrust are the other two, the latter just barely edging out Starfire), even if it did require the Library of Congress for all the necessary materials?

Anyone ever try out the Prime Directive RPG based on SFB's Star Fleet Universe(SFU ain't Star Trek, believe me)? I've been curious, but I cannot find either the d20 or the GURPS Lite version anywhere, and they don't stock it at my FLGS(Hastings is all I'm stuck with, now that Vintage Stock went to all vid games and collectibles).

Just out of curiousity, what's the going rate right now for SF from WOC?

Dad was ground crew. Chief Deputy Maintenance Officer for the 474th tactical fighter wing (F-16s) at Nellis when he retired. Bush Sr. deactivated the squadron later on, IIRC Bush Jr had it recommissioned.

T-38s at RAFB and Warthogs at MB. Man I loved living on the air bases. At Randolph one of my friend's dads worked the tower and had access to arriving flights, and would let us know when some of the cool planes would be arriving for/daparting from the air shows. We'd bike it out to the field and watch 'em land and take off. The U-2 was the biggest trip, a pair of pick-ups would zip alongside it as it landed and guys in back would attach the wing wheels so it wouldn't tip over when it stopped (the plane only had in line gear in the fuselage, shaped like a giant glider). The Harriers were fun to watch too. Another trip was the RAF Vulcan bombers, those things would take off and climb straight up yet mega slowly at that.

Dad retired in 86, went to work for General Electric's military aviation department in Ohio on the B-2 stealth bomber engines, parts and maintenance contracts etc. Shortly after the B-2 was commissioned, tehy swapped to Pratt and Whitney engines (yet GE still recieved a 20-25 year contract's worth of money...your tax dollars at work LOL). He got reassigned to the B-1 bomber engines after that. Suffice it to say I have a butt load of B-2 inauguration memorabilia, and that first plane is on display at Wright Patterson AFB's Air Force museum in Dayton.

Do you mean to buy the entire game line, i.e. copyrights and such?  Don't know.  I actually tried to open up a dialog on that topic (or just licensing the rights) a few months ago but got no response.

I wondered how they dealt with that.  The hanger that houses SOFIA (which happens to be the old B-52 and B-2 assembly hanger at Palmdale) also houses a pair of NASA owned ER-2's (along with a shuttle carrier 747 and a DC-8). The ER-2's are just U-2 that have been recommissioned for Earth Research hence the ER designation.  There was an open house/dedication of the facility in early April and I noiced the wheel configuration of the ER-2s and was wondering how they stayed upright as slow speeds.

Could it be that the only hope we have is for the Star Wars RPG to die a most painful death?

That would free the bonds of Jizzards from the indentured servitude of Lucas and his cabal.  Perhaps then, Wizards, cash-starved and desperate, would be willing to part with the SF materials completely, wishing to walk away from sci-fi gaming entirely?

Hasbro should be at the BPA convention this year - they always are.  Maybe I will try to track one of their reps down and find out what the skinny is on this situation.  I guess it is all about them, since they own WOTC.

I am probably kidding myself, of course, but I still dare to dream...

Dad was avionics maintenance on the KC135s which refuelled the FB111's while at Plattsburgh but when we hit England the moved him to the radio shop as they needed a Master STg. there.
I got to take a MAC flight from Mildenhall to Pease on a KC135 for $10 with DAd in '85 to attend my High School graduation- (the catholic school I had been attending for 3 years treated my 1 year on a base school in England as foriegn study HAH! a year in essentially an American public school treated as foreign study! at least I didn't have to make up the missed religion class.)
The KC 135 refueled Navy A7s all the way across the Atlantic which was pretty cool not matter how many time it happened, Mom took a flash photo inside the plane and an officer came back to talk to DAD- that was funny.
I always got a kick out of the spot where the road was close to the flight line fence at Mildenhall as we called it KGB corner- it was a favorite spot for people to pull their cars off the road and try to take pics. The hope was that you'd be there when a SR71 went up. Something I only saw twice- which was a lucky thing as the plane never hangs around for long and pretty much disappears in seconds- looks like a rocket shooting up.

What really gets me now is I got to see a bunch of castles while in Britian but never played a game of D&D. The school was real clicky and i landed in a click of southerners as the token Yankee there was another guy from the Chicago area who was a gamer but out side of talking car wars with each other it seems we focused on fitting in as best we could. Though i think he did talk Traveller to me a few times.

FYI Will the publishers of Starfire commissioned David Weber and Steve White to write at least 2 novels to help intro the game. I never saw the game but the novels were great, I believe they went back long after the game was out of print and wrote some more in that setting.

In answer to Shadow's question, if Gizzards were to actually put the rights up for sale, it would probably be for a figure as ridiculous as FGU quoted for Space Opera($100K).

Yeah but I'd haggle 'em down.

"What, you don't like my offer? So tell me, how much above and beyond that offer have YOU made off that product in the past ten years? How much do you spend on legal fees each year to ensure nobody else is meeting or exceeding that profit from that product?"

I used to run SFB tournaments in Anchorage, AK... so you might say I was a bit of a fan of SFB.

Prime Directive 1st ed was very cinematic, and is still available from ADB ( http://store.starfleetstore.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=S&Category_Code=PD1E ), $15+shipping for everything they have in stock. It's pretty good, actually, VERY cinematic. All PC's are prime team members, and the presumption is the action is what's portrayed on the tri-vid within the SFU.... Uses a Roll many; count best on open ended d6's vs a "tricode" of 3 TN's Minor/Moderate/Full success; best under half minor is fumble, and best more than double full is a crit.

GPD is not my cup of tea. It's a more "realistic" approach to the SFU, it's a standalone (no GURPS needed), and less focussed overall; Vulcans are like 70 points... I've got it, and it's clear, concise, and fully stand alone, but I can't say I like it.  Then again, I'm biased against GURPS, so that colors. It's more aimed at general trek-like play than 1st ed, and uses lots of templates. SVC likes GURPS, tho, so that's the prime line. (pun intended.)

I have never seen PD20. It's supposedly decent enough, but what I've seen is essentially "Fine if you like d20, suxxors if you don't."

If enough people ask nicely enough, SVC will find someone to adapt GPD to PD1 and release "conversion books" for use with the GPD materials in the PD1 rules.

Cool. Might just get PD1, or even GURPS PD, to see how it shakes out.

Generally biased in favor of SFU over canon ST universe, especially when it came to General War scenarios and the WYN Cluster. The X-ships were a little wack, but nothing too bad(tho I would've loved to get rid of the damn interfering Organians and run a Second General War with X-dreadnaughts and such....)

Not biased against GURPS, as much as I am against SJG...loved 3e, didn't see the need for a fourth edition, especially after over a decade and change of playing the 3e rules...Steve Jackson and crew, on the other hand...just got plain crochety and reactionary ever since the Secret Service raid, especially after Dr. Kromm joined the staff as pretty much the dude who does everything(him and David Pulver).
