December 4, 2008 - 1:32pm | It does take getting used to if your own language doesn't use those sounds. Hearing African Bushmen and some Ehtiopian tribes speak is a very interesting experience. The reason I did it was because this gives this culture a real alien-like flavor to most of us. When I create a race, I try not to make "humans in funny suits" if you know what I mean. I don't do exotic things just to make the race "cool." I do it also to see if my work can be believable (which is cool in itself ;) ). For those people who have difficulty handling the pronounciation, there can be an alternative word that the Gha!kuuk'aa tolerate. Any suggestions? Grendel T. Humans, uncomfortable with trying and failing to pronounce the name, would inevitably come up with a nickname that the race doesn't find too offensive haha Maybe just leave it as-is and state somewhere in your setting text that humans tend to pronounce the race's name in a simpler manner (probably sounds something like ga-ku-ka) and that most Gha!kuuk'aa dislike but are tolerant of it. 3.
