Anonymous November 29, 2008 - 11:13am | OK... so were starting a new game... 1.) Should we base the game on an open mechanic (SRD)? wotc d20 weg d6 (not yet srd) I want to stay with d10 but not sure of there is an open mechanic. 2.) Should we get a lawyer? 3.) Time is limited, are we halting the Frontiersman community zine? What about other projects were collaborating on? KH 4.0, Frontier Battles, other? 4.) Should we have a site dedicated to this game and stay away from SF.us so as to not overlap copyrights and IP? |
Will November 29, 2008 - 11:27am | 1) I favor either d6(can find the dice most anywhere) or d10(to maintain look and feel, and the least pain in the azz mechanics wise). 2) Let's see if we can get this up and running before we think about hiring legal help. 3) NO! This is just one project of many, and not the one most people joined for. 4) No. That would entail a whole set of issues which would detract from the project. TerlObar November 29, 2008 - 11:35am | I vote staying with precentile (d10, d100) for the dice. I'm not sure what you mean by an open mechanic. Ad Astra Per Ardua! SmootRK November 29, 2008 - 11:39am | remember, most of the underlying mechanics need not change. They are not true IP (with legal precedent now), so a d% or d10 can remain. Like I mentioned a few times, the true IP is the setting, races, specific names, or the 'style'. That is where care must be taken.... anything iffy should be tweaked to differentiate from the original. New terms should be used, and not just synonyms (is that right?). Don't just call it Frontier Space, or 'the Frontier'.... a new concept should be used... 'the Vastness' or 'Nexus Region' (where each race's realms of control start to intersect).... as to changing the site.... not now, maybe not necessary. Perhaps when things take shape a separate space might be needed to further differentiate from original IP, but I think that is long off. Lawyers - no way. At this point, that would (or could) even imply that we are concerned with carving out usable IP from others... and frankly, I will continue to voice out anytime I think we are approaching that line of IP infringement. If we are dilligent, and truly concerned with ensuring we are not infringing, then we need not worry. <insert witty comment here> |
Will November 29, 2008 - 11:44am | FrontierSpace is just a working title, I think, and WOTC can't nail us for using a working title, can they? SmootRK November 29, 2008 - 11:46am | when I mentioned Frontier Space, I was just talking in general and not referring to this project name. I am sure we are quite safe with such a working project name. <insert witty comment here> |

Gilbert November 29, 2008 - 2:13pm | Why don't we put the info we have in here and go from there. Go to other projects for info to get in here, also. After the creator is notified of this idea. I did not think we were going to make a new book, I was looking at the most favored rules. |
blath December 1, 2008 - 8:18am | I also vote for keeping it at this site, at least for now unless voted otherwise. I really like this project, it's building and creating something that will hopefully be able to stand on it's own while allowing those of us for reasons of nastalgia etc to join up through here. With the other projects, not just StarFrontiers but others that used similar books and IPs (be it fan baseds or some sort of license agreement) it kind of bugged me in how all the hardwork might be taken away or restricted somehow, but this project seems to give some hope for something stable to build on and actually keep. |
