Ya know... I like this site.

I've been looking at other social networking sites around the web.  Sure, some have snazzy flash graphics consuming bandwidth.  Sure some are better for single guys to "pick up chicks"... but this site is pretty unique.

It's not unique because it has forums... I mean come on - what site doesn't nowadays?  Private messages?  Please.  Dime a dozen, sites like that.  Documents?  Downloads?  Those might be presented interestingly but they aren't what makes the site unique.  The project system is unique too, but that's not at all what I'm talking about.

It's not unique because it's for a dedicated bunch of like-minded people.  Sure, there are nearly 500 members registered.  But they're not here for the passion of the game or to exchange ideas - they're just here to download free stuff... and to them I am happy to provide it.

We're a like-minded group of people, but we're lacking something: direction.  There is a collection of various ideas and interests, ranging from spaceship combat to interesting races and equipment... to online tools and utilities.  That's all great.  Some people work on this... some people work on that.... and not a lot gets really accomplished.

So yes, I like this site.  I like it because of all of you.  But what is lacking?  What is it that causes it to be unique, but more importantly, what is it that could be done to organize us into a functional unit where each gives according to his or her time and talent to a whole, and in the end we have something we truly treasure?  I don't care if that something is a new edition of the game, traded between fans like us (cuz we could never sell it), a new supplement, a new module... anything tangible that shows this gathering of minds yields results?

Chime in - please.  I value all of your opinions.

but... please don't chime in with reminders that we need to PLAY.  Yes, we do.  That's a given.  Many of us DO play with our families or friends.  But this site was originally intended to be a project site, giving tools to folks that could work together, collaborate, and create.  So far we haven't produced too many finished goods... and it's time we did.  The starfrontiersman has been a great project, and probably the best webzine I've seen to date (thank you all so much for the help!) but it has been a vehicle, not a destination.  It needs to continue to be a vehicle... but we need a destination.

So stand up and be heard?

Overall I like the site too.....

here are a couple of observations:

The biggest thing I notice about the site is that it is just cumbersome to look through the projects. I would like to use some of the content for games, but it takes a while just to weed through it to find anything.

I also agree about having someone in charge of a particular project. Designs by commity never work.

Maybe if everyone takes it upon themselves to be more encouraging to others. If a guy asks a question they either get no response or a huge dose of wanking nerdism.

If you are wondering what that is? If you start a sentence with "Actually" or "In reality" or you copy and past from Wikipedia you are probably wanking. I think the point is to share ideas not to try and contradict everyone. I think this behavior has chased a lot of cool people away.

At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy......

Excellent points umungus, and we should all strive to be as welcoming as w00t and a few others. More would have left had he not been around.

We needed time and better page load times. Now that time has passed and the bad fruit has been weeded out and the site finally got good page load times, this site is a nice place to visit. We had growing pains, and that's what we needed to get past. Now everyone cooperates along the same path and undestands the goals. Newcomers see how we interact and can pick up on the primarily unspoken rules of interaction here. We all have plenty of room to create and interact without stomping each other out.

Mostly people seem to post downloads instead of group endeavors. The group thing doesn't ever seem to work out. People tend to take the phrase "a feeling of ownership" a step too far.

You have a point but in areas like the discussion on vrusk that implord and others and myself were involved in there was a ton of cooporation and give and take. I dont always like every single thing Implord says but thats what makes him so interesting (a yes dral that agrees with everything you say doesn't challenge you to think) and the brainstorming that went on concerning vrusk and dralls produced great stuff that would have never been as good if it was the effort of 1 person.

My point is that the group think thing isn't always condusive for producing something but a brainstorming thread can really sing as people get on board and bounce ideas off each other and the wall. I love it. and not every group endeavor is for each person. You do what catches your interest.

I'm glad to have found this community, mostly because everyone here seems to have a genuine love for the game, and are mature in the way they interact with others here. It's mainly this reason why I have considered releasing my long time project here. I have a great fear of stepping on someone's copyright which is why I've been considering all the angles as to how to put my project out there, because while I'm just trying to share something I'm passionate about (and not to make a profit) some people might not feel the same way. I'd love to have others find the work I've done beneficial (and I'd be flattered if people actually started using my rules set), and with the amount of stuff I still want to see in my system, there would be plenty of room for others to contribute if you guys find the system to your liking.

By the same token I'm more than willing to share my experiences as a successful game master and amature game designer for over two decades with anyone willing to listen to my often rambling thoughts.

Just to chime in a bit, this site is amazing.  I downloaded all the remasters and the Frontiersman yesterday and I am deeply impressed.  This is an amazing set of items and a lot of hard work.  Thanks to everyone for keeping this thing going.

Thanks,
Duncan

Duncan, it's truly been a community effort on all fronts. We have a great bunch of Frontiersman here and abroad. :-)

Not sure if your aware - a lot of content is inside projects (contains by subject) which can be accessed by joining them. By joining whenever something new is posted your What's New tab (at the top of the site) will show you new content in a project. Great way to keep informed and participate.

Just wanted to say that I have felt welcomed here.  I enjoy the cooperative, collaborative spirit I've seen here.  I've gotten tons of ideas for my own game, and I've thrown out tons of ideas myself.

I like the site. One thing to remember is it is a hobby not a job, most of us have jobs some of us very taxing jobs & if it is not work we got some other 3 ring circus we are in charge of. So we work on things as we can or feel the inspiration.

I hop around a bit on subjects but that is because I have real life distractions (work, yard & home, religious & hubbies health, so fun comes when I can actually sit down and think and play) and I do get side tracked or am not "feeling" inspired on that right now but on something else, but I will again in a bit be inspired to finnish up the previous idea. So I can look pretty scattered but often it is just lack of time & energy getting in my way more than not thinking upon what I am working on. Also we got people using different game systems too, so that takes some converting for them to either add to AD/Zeb or put ideas from us using AD/Zeb rules to their systems. I personally have found the site to be a great tool, I have found reading the forums a wealth of ideas, perspectives and knowledge. I love the folks here. :) I think the magazines is where many finished projects do end up so people can download that in a nice finished look for their use.

I really appreciate this site, the folks here and enjoy working on projects.

On a personal note I tend to get more focussed on vacation & as T-Day is approaching I hope to finnish up an article I have not posted much on or had time to finnish (but it be not forgotten), get more D&D appropriate sci-fi elements and GW converted, maybe find time to get more mags up on the site for resource purposes. My to do list for SF projects is probably too big as I have some gardening to do lists too. So please be patient with my slowness on projects as I am juggling stuff.

Agreed, I attempted to participate in a few motorcycle discussions there and every one of them turned into porn. Now I don't know or care if that's just a happenstance to those particular groups or if it's a reddit standard, suffice it to say I found little use for the outlet.
