  • Artwork is always needed.
  • Some submission will not make Issue 9 but will be in a future issue guaranteed.
  • The Star Frontiersman Team will be scheduling publication dates so that the community is informed.

No you wont have any compatability issues. Word 2007 has a compatability mode which allows you to edit Word 2003 documents. Thats what I was doing.

Open Office also opens Word 97/XP/2003 docs(same file format for all three)and allows you to edit and save them in that format.

It can save them in that format as a default, and you can export to PDF.

Very disappointing. I didn't want the Frontiersman to die. Bill did an amazing job of getting the project off the ground. He even got permission to proceed by Wizards. Too bad that it is to die like this. without even a wimper.

Don't give up yet Umungus. As the months get darker, people will come back to the site. I think it's healthy to have other interests, and not to get too wrapped in this. I've been extremely busy over the last few months with work taking way too much of my time - but I know it'll balance out. I still have articles which i am putting together (not forgotten) and two projects on the go. These are getting put together slowly, but are not 'seen' on the radar of this site.

What I do find frustrating is person on this site requesting help, and then not bothering to answer the people offering the help. That is just plainly rude - or is it I didn't explain myself properly? I offered to put together this issue, to which I would use the industry standard DTP, plus I've been trained in it; I'm pretty good at it too, not blowing my trumpet too much. Nobody took me up on this. Why? I have no idea except it does put me off visiting the site. I contribute to other wargaming sites who do appreciate what I do; so my inclination is to provide support to them.

That's really the crunch, a bit more communication would put everyone at ease. Guys, if you can't put together the magazine for whatever rea, son, please pass the info on. Cheers.

I agree elpotof, a little more communication would be good. I would like to know what is going on. I think that if others don't have the time or the skill on the program they should let someone else work on it too.

I think that the moderators of The Frontiersman should take you up on your offer.

I understand that things come up. That does not mean a guy should drop the ball, just hand it off.

I also put in a lot of work on content for this issue. I had to crunch a bit to make the deadline. I just would like to see the issue come together.

Dont worry guys there will be another issue. Just wait a bit. Think of it as a time for everybody to find something new with their gaming. Maybe you guys could put out some other material to fill the gap that SFMAN has left during this little break. I would help as much as I can but College has finally started going for me which means a new job, classes Monday through Friday, and plenty of extra work to do or I would get some people together a just create the issue... but that is stretching it for me.

Why did you volunteer to work on the issue if you knew that you would not have enough time?

Why not have elpotof work on it?

Where is everyone else that is supposed to work on it?

Take care of college, family, and work.  The SFMAN can wait.  Dont stress yourself out over what is an enjoyable hobby.  When you start getting paid to run a magazine, then you can stress out.  Smile
I appreciate that you are trying to find time to work on SFMAN.
Thanks!

No, I really have to go with umungus on this.  He isn't out of line, nor is he being rude.  It's a valid question, and one that needs answering at this point.  Why did people volunteer to work on this magazine if they knew they had tight time constraints because of outside things like family and work?  Come to think of it, why did any of this get off the ground when the guys who were central to the whole thing knew they wouldn't be able to do more than give it a push down the hill and watch it go from there?

When you volunteer to do something, you accept a responsibility.  It doesn't matter if what you volunteered for is "important" or not, you still took the responsibility on yourself.  Now, it's perfectly fine if you find you can't do what you said you would do.  Things happen, to everybody.  But taking on that responsibility knowing you have a good chance not to be able to meet it?  Disappearing for months at a time and then coming back with apologies and promises, only to disappear again?  That's just rude to the people counting on you.  Find someone else who can pick up the slack.  Say something to the people.  Don't just disappear and then come back later pleading "lol life!"

I've already essentially left this group for a number of reasons.  You're a bunch of fantastic guys, but between the absenteeism of the guys who were most important to this project, the lack of performance of the much-touted "group management" of the Frontiersman magazine, the complete lack of anything resembling production from any of the gigantic pile of users on the names list and most importantly, my recognition of my own inability to meet the responsibilities I volunteered for, I cannot meaningfully contribute anything anymore.  I wish you all very well, and I do mean that, but it's time for me to move on.  And lay off umungus, because he's right to voice those questions.

Not laying into anyone.

I haven't emailed any of the SFman crew (save for my content submissions) so I don't know what's going on with them. Has anyone tried this venue of contact? When I returned from my hiatus Bill was already noticeably absent, resurfaced briefly and made a few comments, I haven't heard from him since. But then again, like I said I haven't tried to contact him either. So based on my interactions with him I'm in no place to judge him nor make comments about him. If anyone else here is following that same pattern, then the same applies to them as well. If anyone here has made attempts at contact and said attempts were summarily unanswered/ignored, then any resulting comments could be justifiable.

I do more lurking than anything else nowadays.  I wish I could do more, but between work, family and ever changing college schedules I just cannot do more.

However, I do subscribe to the belief that participation breeds more participation.  If there is material that can be made into a zine, even if smaller than what we were accustomed to, then by all means pass the buck to someone else so that it can get out to the 'users' of the material.  Somewhere there is a user who just needs to spark off an idea to get his or her own participation going.

I truly hope that with the cooler weather coming there will be new participation here.

I think we'd all agree that the Frontiersman was the vehicle which got this site off the ground. In order to keep this from becoming a dead site we really need to get this out on a regular basis, even if is merely a dozen to a score pages. Anything would be better than months of nothing on end. I think I speak for all of us when I say that we really greatly appreciate everything the magazine staff have put into this project. But that being said I ask again that if things are really busy for the staff, at this time, simply send the information/documents/submissions to those of us who have volunteered some time and skills to get this issue out. We can worry about who does issue 10 later.

Please let us know.

I'm unable to view pdf files so I'm not in the majority of those eagerly awaiting issue #9. But I just fired off a query to those three addresses (the SFman staff) anyways.

Thanks for doing that Shadow. Hopefully we will hear something.

P.S. I had dial up for a long time. I opened up PDF's all the time. Maybe your modem speed setting is too low, or you need more RAM. Just an idea. I'm deffinately not a computer expert.

I'm sure the other half of the equation is it's time for a new PC (mine's still beige LOL). Either that or someone cast a feeblemind spell on this one.

I hear ya. The only reason I got a new computer is that mine just burned out. I only had it for a year and a half. It is funny how something that you spend $500-$1000 on is considered disposable. Errr, or not so funny.

What burned out?  They are repairable.  You might have been able to get it back up for a lot less than the price of a new computer.  Especially if it wasn't that old.

Howdy fellas --

Considering the workload the frontiersman's staff is under, perhaps we should start a second magazine. There was talk on another thread about us starting a newsletter type publication. We could consider it a mini-magazine with gaming articles and art AND any news we'd like to put in (*industry news, anyone's efforts on SF's behalf towards WoTC/Hasboro, etc ...). No reason we shouldn't do it, just need some people to send stuff in and a name for it. I'd be happy to do a bit of work on it, too.
