Anonymous April 24, 2008 - 10:55am | Just watching some 80's cartoons on youtube and had a tought about using them as ideas for the SF universe. One example might be a campaign based about a good side "GI Joe" and a evil side "Cobra Commander". Very well defined "sides", one attacking the other always defending. Galaxy Rangers plots (thx Bill for the robot horses!) Visionaries - special abilities with powered armor .... |
Sam April 24, 2008 - 11:40am | Earth Corps... something beyond understanding lurking beneath the surface -- a way to introduce Lovecraftian horror types into a Modern/Sci-Fi setting. It has been done in recent Sci-Fi -- Event Horrizon, I think, had a great deal of "evil beyond our understanding" to it. Thundaar the Barbarian -- post apocolyptic world struggling to survive and reclaim the planet. Ancient high tech considered sorcery (*and the show did have, well, sorcery in it to boot). Great way to adventure thusly is to have heroes explore a ruined world/civilization and have to go "native" to travel. Their limited high tech weaponry will seem like magic to the new cultures. Other games out there have similar concepts. |

umungus April 24, 2008 - 2:34pm | Big fan of Thundarr. Good idea. At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy...... |

Neither side hitting the broad side of a barn.... I actually had an Autobot Star Lawman in a game once.... "You're everything that's base in humanity," Cochrane continued. "Drawing up strict, senseless rules for the sole reason of putting you at the top and excluding anyone you say doesn't belong or fit in, for no other reason than just because you say so." —Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stephens, Federation |

Will April 25, 2008 - 12:47pm | Three good 80s cartoons which make good campaign fodder would be Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers, Macross/Robotech, and Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeta Gundam(better than the originial). Rick May 16, 2008 - 10:18am | Still liked Talespin, think it could work, and it falls into the idea of having well defined "sides". 'Course you'd have to upgrade things to starships, goes without saying really...... And make some intelligent choices on what races the heroes are. |
w00t (not verified) May 16, 2008 - 11:02am | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulysses_31 Notice the laser pistol doubles as a *ahem* lite saber. (you say light, I say lite). I rented DVD from the local video store with four episodes - got some great ideas for SF. |
Sargonarhes May 16, 2008 - 7:30pm | And no one thought of a campaign set up like the Legend of Galactic Heroes? Epicness defined. I remember another old cartoon, something I think was titled Starchaser: the Legend of Orin? It's a Star Wars rip-off but what the hey. In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same. |
Rick May 17, 2008 - 1:29am | I'm going to make a plug for a contemporary web comic, 'cos it would make a fantastic SF campaign, complete with half-cousin to a Dralasite. http://www.schlockmercenary.com/index.html Now that's got everything for a great campaign, humour, drama, even more humour! |
Mycanid May 20, 2008 - 1:18am | Thundarr the Barbarian would be a great idea ... how far would this take one out of the "standard" Star Frontiers" realm and into the "Fantasy Star Frontiers" realm, though? @}-,-`- "It is a joyful thing indeed to hold intimate converse with a man after one’s own heart, chatting without reserve about things of interest or the fleeting topics of the world; but such, alas, are few and far between." – Yoshida Kenko (1283-1350), [i]Tsurezure-Gusa (1340) |
Imperial Lord May 19, 2008 - 7:18am | Well it could be a situation where a PC party lands accidentally on a Thundarr planet... With all of these cartoons and stuff you don't necessarily have to play the actual characters from the program. You can insert conventional Star Frontiers PCs into the program. |
umungus May 19, 2008 - 9:28am | Have any of you read the comic Alien Legion? Reminded me a lot of Star Frontires. Lots of good adventure ideas. http://cpotts1.home.netcom.com/index.htm/ Duh, I realized that there is a link to a site that has conversions..... http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Zone/2259/intro.html At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy...... |
