Anonymous April 1, 2008 - 1:39pm | Refer to: Timeline. I noticed you were using "AD". While this is common in public usage, I thought you might appreciate a more nutral and accurate designation. The term "AD" means "Ano Domini" or "After Dominion" and refers to the beginning of Christ's rule on earth. Since many contest Jesus' role as the messaiah and others would contest that the Bible nowhere says that Christ began his rule on earth at that time or even his 33rd year, and that Jesus was actually born two years before year 1, "AD" is an inappropriate term for the most part. Many archaeologists and historians prefer the term "CE" for "Common Era". Additionally, the term "BC" is also contested for the reason that Jesus was actually born in the year 2 before CE or "BCE". He was also not born on January first or December 25th, making the beginning of the year a total misnomer. So the best terms to use are "CE" and "BCE". Just stating that in case it matters to you, especially since you are including non-human non-earth races. |
Gargoyle2k7 April 4, 2008 - 5:52pm | Well stated. If, however, this timeline is from a purely human viewpoint and by judeo-christian-muslim scholars, then perhaps the AD appellation would be more appropriate. Otherwise, I would suggest a CE/BCE appellation, or even a new dating system (like SF did; pf = pre-frontier, fy = federation year). BTW, why anonymous? Reveal yourself! You are welcome! Will April 5, 2008 - 9:05am | It's from a purely Human viewpoint...the Confederation of Two Races uses a calendar somewhat similar to this(a subject of a later document, once I get some time freed up). The CE/BCE dating system is in limited use, in one or two fields(and not even widely adopted there), while the AD/BC dating system is used as a date/time keeping standard throughout the international community(particularlly in business, where it wouldn't exactly be practical to translate between Western dates and the various Asian calendars). Gargoyle2k7 April 5, 2008 - 5:40pm | Carry on then, Will. It seems you have already crossed that bridge before "annonymous" :) Long live the Frontier! |
