Feedback on the Frontiersman

I've noticed a lot of people are downloading the Frontiersman and either not saying anything or just saying things like, "I like it!" and, "Wow!" What the authors of the articles in the Frontiersman really need is feedback -- tell them you used their article, how it went, what you liked and disliked. We've got a nice growing community now. Let's start using the power of that community to do more than just download PDFs!

I think it has a little to do with familiarity and a little to do with appreciation and a little to do with game prowess of the article writers.

Most of the people reading at this point are old fans that haven't played in a while. They aren't looking at this in an analytical fashion, but in a more appreciative fashion that both the game is still going and that stuff is being produced for it.

Only those who play the game currently and who genuinely want to use the mechanics are going to analyze far enough to question or comment on any aspect of the presented articles.

If the articles are fine as they are and need little to no adjustment, "good work" is pretty much all you're going to get. This is going to be especially the case when you're covering ground that has been well worn and it's kinda hard to color outside the lines. When writers cover new ground, stuff that hasn't been done before, you're more likely to get comments and opinions about how people think it should be handled, or questions about gaps in the mechanics.

Thus, most of the material in the Star Frontiersman covers familiar ground (no new mechanics) and it's really hard to say anything about it except "I like this", because while it covers old ground, it presents it in a new way that's appreciated.

For instance, I knew when I sent my Starflight! article in that there would be questions, even letting the reader know that it was experimental. The mechanics were new and needed much adjustment and completion. And sure enough, someone contacted Bill with questions that he sent my way and were answered in this issue.

Over at ENWorld there are a few 'fantastic's and 'wow's.

For myself, let me state that I love the Alternity races.  The equipment in this issue will certainly get some play, and the Melee Weapon article with quality aspects is worthy of mention as well.

I agree with Corjay...

And, personally, I think getting decent feedback will always be a problem when giving it pretty much requires that people join this site, request membership in the project, recognize that the forum of SFMAN is different than the general forums, and see that their input is being actively solicited.

Have about putting a "We want to hear from you!  Click HERE!" link in each issue of SFMAN that brings people directly to a thread that even guests can posts on?

Excellent idea!

Each article might have a unique link to click on (although it might look alike on the page), going to a simple feedback form.  That link might have some 'subject' preprogrammed in, or might send the feedback to both the SFMan site and the specific author automatically... but this can be behind the scenes.

Downloaded and printed out every copy of the Frontiersman. A lot of reading... a lot of great material. I especially enjoy all the new races. I’m looking forward to having my group encounter them all... Can't wait until the next issue.

Yeah I love the ezine and when I started downloading the Frontiersman I really got into the rule ideas, new races, Refereeing tips, and much more. Bill Logan started d one hell of a project. The only part that it lacks is not having any real help from the community. If we got more involved then we could help Bill get out an issue better.
