Likely was a heavy lift shuttle (HS 2-3) left over from the colony ships that first brought humanity to Clarion. This means it's old and maintenance is an issue. However, it's a product of technology that intended for it to last a long service life.

Needed to ferry personnel and cargo to and from surface of prospective comply so plenty of cargo space and surplus life support.

Retrofitted many times since arriving in Clarion.

Chem drive and robust fuel bunkersge.

At time of first contact with Dralasites and vrusk some discussion was made over purchasing one of the cutting edge vrusk atomic drives and updating the craft again but appropriations stalled in the House of Lords.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

I think it needs to be a tail first lander since a colony expedition could not expect to find a runway dozens or hundreds of light years from Earth

Lots of quirks due to age.

pf-100 era scout ship, can be a tail lander if outfitted as such. Has both ion and chemical drives for jump and planetary use.
I'm not overly fond of Zeb's Guide...nor do I have any qualms stating why. Tongue out
