jedion357 May 13, 2020 - 8:29am | Popular on worlds like Clarion the inertia umbrella is an adaption of the inertia screen technology. Its a pole with a minipowerclip (Zebs 10 SEU) It projects a meter diameter screen like an umbrella and will repulse rain at the cost of 1 SEU/hour. It can also be used as a shield in combat but any inertia damage from shooting weapons burns it out immediately (the impact velocity of fired weapons does this) although it will function for that one moment as an inertia screen providing the mini clip has 2 SEU left and the user is not using another screen of any type (something about harmonic resonances shorting out competing screens). If the damage comes from muscle powered melee or thrown weapons the inertia umbrella may not short out- 50% chance. jedion357 May 13, 2020 - 8:34am | Inspiration behind the inertia umbrella is as always to extrapolate other applicaitons of existing technologies like the inertia screen but also to create items that might be found in the cargo hold of the Serena Dawn and pressed into service by enterprising PCs. jedion357 May 13, 2020 - 8:57am | Other application of the inertia screen technology- in vehicles to shield an occupant from damage during a crash. but again the character cannot have an active screen of any type. Thus vehicles have a sensor that tell it that the occupant has an active screen. it prevents the vehicle from activating its collision inertia screen. This sensor technology has been adapted into an "off hand" glove for shootist to help them identify if someone has an active screen and what type. The "index" or main finger of the glove is pointed at someone within 3 meters and if there is an active screen one of five lights will indicate which type on the back of the hand. There is vibrate setting to prevent lights from alerting opponents where different vibrations codes tell the user which screen is in opperation. Since the vibrations codes are continuous they can be distracting the character must make a INT check to remember to point the finger away from the target or suffer -1 IM if using the glove in vibration mode. 100 Cr Wt: N/A I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 May 13, 2020 - 9:04am | Speical rule: vehicles equipped with anticollision inertia screens protect the occupants from 50% damage during crash. cost is 2000/ occupant of vehicle and they run off of the vehicle's parabattery. There must be 2 SEU/ occupant at the time of the collision for all the screens to activate. Some vehicles only have this for the front seats. its uncommon in cycles. vehcile is also equipped with a sensor to prevent this screen from activating if an occupant has an activated screen in operation. Morkar May 13, 2020 - 2:34pm | I've toyed with inertia screens for space ships to help offset the high G from acceleration. |
KRingway May 13, 2020 - 10:57pm | Yeah, I as toying with the idea of inertia screens as part of aircar crash/safety systems. I think they would have to have their own temporary, one-shot power supply just in case the parabattery is knocked out. |
jedion357 May 14, 2020 - 7:13pm | I double checked the rule book and the rule on power screens is that you can only wear one at a time and it takes 5 turns to take one off or put it on. That is a bit involved. reading the rule it seems to imply that you cannot wear two screens and just switch between them. To explain that I would conjecture that screen circutry inside an active screen "sets up an harmonic resonance" and causes a feedback loop. Hence the prohibition against wearing two. To use an inertia screen in vehicles for collision mitigation or in an accelleration couch on a starship (also does double duty with combat survival) will require a sensor to detect the presence of another screen's circutry within the area of effect that prevents its automatic activation. JCab747 October 13, 2020 - 1:17pm | I like your idea... If I am not mistaken, the monorails in the "Dark Side of the Moon" module have large inertia screens that activate when a crash occurs. These come on whether a character has a personal screen on or not. Joe Cabadas |

I like your idea... If I am not mistaken, the monorails in the "Dark Side of the Moon" module have large inertia screens that activate when a crash occurs. These come on whether a character has a personal screen on or not. Alright, too bad I didn't have this comment when I was working on the article. So here is how I'm going to reconcile that- the train's screens are very big and robust and they overpower the personal screens? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 October 14, 2020 - 3:40pm | So what I see in that comment is that a personal inertia screen does not figure into the calculation for the craft but the inertia suit ie skein suit does. which mirrors what I did in the article- characters can't work a situation to get the benefit of 2 screens I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
