I have two daughters, 8 & 12.

They naturally love Disney princess movies, Barbie and Tinkerbell videos. They also get on kicks where they will watch the same move over and over. Disney movies arnt so bad by Barbie, Tinkerbell and Harry Potter are starting to wear on me.

However, ever so often they encounter a classic movie and suddenly they have a new favorite. Like Jaws- they discovered Jaws and love this movie, they watch it every so many weeks. In fact we call it "You're going to need a bigger boat" not Jaws.  I never know what movie it will be that they latch onto next.

For instance I picked up Real STeal the robot Rocky movie with Hugh Jackman which they love but I happen to tell them that it was just Rocky with robots and that lead to the question "Who's Rocky?" and a drug store had a $5 copy of the DVD so now Rocky's been watched a half dozen times because the youngest didn't get how the two movies were the same story on the first viewing. Which has lead to interesting discussions with her about stories and movies.

Latest movie is Top Gun picked up for a dollar at a yard sale just because I wanted to see it again. Suddenly there is a new favorite and she's calling it "Danger Zone" for the song. Now a comment from me about KHs means we'll have to play KHs with them cast as the fighter jocks.

On the other hand I thought they'd love Indiana Jone's, bought the first movie and promoted it to them and they left the room bored.

I cant predict what will catch and what wont with them but its fun to see it happen and while I find Tom Cruise a little annoying, having Top Gun played repeatedly is better than a Barbie video IMO.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

LOL yeah the kids have stereo-types about parents, they think they know all about us... Laughing

My teen son went through being a bad ass phase it was epic fail, first he kept doing these karate moves at me which I kept patiently telling him to stop it, well one day I had removed al the furniture in the dinning room which had at the time wall to wall carpet (was going to rip it out) on top of hardwood floor, he comes running in does a flying hollywood kick thingy at me and as there was a nice carpet floor with no objects for him to be hurt hurt on and a wood floor underneath that would absorb impact a bit of the impact I decided it was time to stop this once and for all, I actually put some of my real Martial arts training to use, garbed the ball of his foot and spun him up into the air and down hard... he was all crying, and dad wondered in laughing "you finally decided to teach him a lesson?"... and I say to my kid "Kicks are fancy but but easy to counter son, please knock this off before you get hurt"my kid was all "how did you know to do that?", dad (still laughing) "Your mom has had martial arts training", son "I never see her practice!", both of us "how would you know what we do when your at school?" Dad "Now leave your mom alone, she can really hurt you if she wanted to."

So did he learn no, next month he decided to try and use slam dancing against his dad (who is disabled) only thing was he didn't know what he was doing. He comes flying down the hall at dad, and dad's also disabled friend (both guys used to do the pit dancing in their teens, so they know what to do), disabled people 1 teen 0 and on the floor crying again. "How did you guys do that?" (son), adults "you will get killed if you try and slam dance that way." son "you know how to slam dance?" adults "yes" kid "your old" adults "so is slam dancing" kid "what about mom?" dad "oh she can hold her own, she was a head banger." kid "what?!?"

He finally grew out of that phase Foot in mouth You would never know he acted like a jerk for a while in a weird effort to be "cool".

The point is though he did not know all of mom & dad's "skills" Smile because he apparently thought we did nothing but mom and dad things (what ever that is) in our lives.

At my house, I have 4 kids, and we do vintage TV series marathons.

We did the original Battlestar Galactica, and one of my teenage daughters became a huge fan.  We went to a convention and got to meet some of the original actors, and she was beside herself!  She now thinks the original series is better than the remake.

We just finished a Babylon 5 marathon.  At first, they laughed at the 90s computer animation, but that quickly ended as they started to get into the story.  Then they talked about the show all the time!

They love the new Doctor Who series, especially Doctors 10 & 11.  I've managed to get them interested in the classic series.  They love Tom Baker.  Really, they love all of them.  We were lucky enough to meet Sylvester McCoy at a convention.  He is very funny!  We just recently finished a 3rd Doctor marathon, and they gained a new appreciation for how cool he was.

When we watched Space: 1999, they were fascinated with the fact that there was no computer animation involved.  Somehow they found that mind-boggling.  They couldn't believe that all the ships were handmade models, and that sometimes entire planets were little tiny sets.  I guess it is kind of a lost art today.

We will be doing a Star Trek marathon next, starting with the original series, then the animated series, then the others and the newest movies.  We've had the DVD set of the animated series for a long time, and so they already know that one pretty well.  One of them loves Voyager the most, and my wife is a fan of Deep Space Nine.  It will be interesting to see what they think when they watch them all back to back.

I grew up watching the original Godzilla movies, but my kids just thought he looked ridiculous - UNTIL I pointed out that Pokemon are based on Kaiju.  That was all it took.  They were hooked after that.  My boys kept discussing what moves the classic monsters were using...

My youngest is now 10 years old, and I will tell you...  they have discovered cosplay.  My oldest 3 now make their own costumes and all of us go to conventions every year.  One year, they were all dressed as Harry Potter characters.  Believe me, this thing takes on a life of its own...
