Kids and classic movies

I have two daughters, 8 & 12.

They naturally love Disney princess movies, Barbie and Tinkerbell videos. They also get on kicks where they will watch the same move over and over. Disney movies arnt so bad by Barbie, Tinkerbell and Harry Potter are starting to wear on me.

However, ever so often they encounter a classic movie and suddenly they have a new favorite. Like Jaws- they discovered Jaws and love this movie, they watch it every so many weeks. In fact we call it "You're going to need a bigger boat" not Jaws.  I never know what movie it will be that they latch onto next.

For instance I picked up Real STeal the robot Rocky movie with Hugh Jackman which they love but I happen to tell them that it was just Rocky with robots and that lead to the question "Who's Rocky?" and a drug store had a $5 copy of the DVD so now Rocky's been watched a half dozen times because the youngest didn't get how the two movies were the same story on the first viewing. Which has lead to interesting discussions with her about stories and movies.

Latest movie is Top Gun picked up for a dollar at a yard sale just because I wanted to see it again. Suddenly there is a new favorite and she's calling it "Danger Zone" for the song. Now a comment from me about KHs means we'll have to play KHs with them cast as the fighter jocks.

On the other hand I thought they'd love Indiana Jone's, bought the first movie and promoted it to them and they left the room bored.

I cant predict what will catch and what wont with them but its fun to see it happen and while I find Tom Cruise a little annoying, having Top Gun played repeatedly is better than a Barbie video IMO.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

My kids were bored with Star Wars.  Maybe they're still a little too young or maybe it just doesn't have the same appeal that it did to our generation.

i find that the film age seems to turn my son off sometimes.  Like I have him watch older shows and he doesn't like them but he sees something just like it or even totally based on the old show and he loves it... like the newer animation style or camera tech matters to his acceptance of it.  Old stuff looks bad to him so he doesn't buy into it.

I have a tough time guessing what will resonate with my kids. Like Forest Gump, this movie resonated with them and I cant figure why. Is it because he's an adult character that is uncomplicated and would engage with them on their level? (If thats true i have to rethink some small portions of my parenting). Is it because he needed braces and one of my daughters had birth defect requiring surgeries and casts and the idea of a character like her being so successful appeals to her? (That doesnt explain it for the other child). Is it that Forest Gump is a timeless character? (If that was true he'd be a cliche by now).

I think a lot of it has to do with kids these days being spoiled. With videos, internet and cable TV they have a huge amount of stuff to watch and distract them, and it's all newer CGI animation and effects. I grew up watching movies way before my time, got hooked and was and still am a John Wayne fan. You probably couldn't get kids to watch his movies today, not unless they were really into westerns and old WWII films. But the Duke will always be a favorite of mine.

I couldn't figure out what kids would want to see. Just try something, if it's really old just make sure it's like a period film so there won't be cheezy looking effects. I could almost see their eyes role at something like Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers. Maybe it's time for those to get a remake.

I've been pleasantly surprised that my oldest son is now hooked on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" on Netflix. Both guys are also watching "Full Metal Alchemist" which doesn't appeal to me at all, but my wife watches with them. We all got together to watch "Airplane!"

I am serious, and don't call me Shirley.

Because the fam enjoyed Forest Gump so much they were out shopping and spotted a DVD of Turner and Hooch with Tom Hanks and bought it based on their enjoyment of Forest Gump. The kids love dog videos so I did figure this would appeal to them. Its more comedy than police procedural.

If nothing else (and there's actually a lot that I like about the movie) "Labyrinth" has casued me pain due to the association every time I stop by a Troll NPC in WoW and hear "You stay away from the Voodoo" which leads to...
Whodo?
Youdo, remind me of the Babe...

I'm betting generations before us felt much the same way.  I think "spoiled" may not be exactly the right term but I think I know what you mean. My kids have no concept of having to wait for a show to come on. All they know is press a button and watch what you want.  It means learning how to filter out the garbage versus in the old days a studio exec would do that and hopefully only good programming would make it on air since there was limited programming time.

I'm not sure about Buck Rogers and FG, but the original BSG has actually aged quite well.

It's possible some of that is being closed minded to something just because it seems old fashioned.  He may appreciate some of those shows as he matures.  I felt much the same way when I was younger but as I matured I was more open minded about old folks tv and once I actually sat and watched them I really enjoyed. Some of that is just not liking something because it's not from your generation.

-George (Burns) and Gracie
-I Love Lucy
-Barney Miller
-Night Court (not old but seemed old fashioned)
-John Wayne
-Carey Grant
-James Stewart

My kids channel surfed into I Love Lucy (colorized) and stayed to watch. I've caught them watching it on random times since. Though dated and usually in B/W the comedy holds up well and a child as young as 8 seems to enjoy it. My 13 year old seems to be the one who likes it the most.

Find a used copy of:

Princess Bride & Stardust where instant hits with my kids and the other youngens

Monty Python's King Arthur and the Search for the Holy Grail

Maybe old Japanese Monster Films: old Gamera, Mothra and movies like Godzilla versus what ever monster (the Smog Monster is probably one of the most kiddy of the Godzilla films).

The Ultraman TV series

Maybe even Gilligan's Island

Tropic Thunder might be too grown up for the 8 year old with all the drug stuff, but Last Action Hero was pretty funny and kid friendly while poking fun at Hollywood.

Since yesterday was my b-day I had previously bid for some Star Trek stuff on ebay and became the owner of Wrath of Kahn, Search for Spock and Voyage Home (didn't bother with #1 The Motion Picture or #5 the search for god) My 8 yr old immediately told me she didn't like these old Star Trek as they looked old (her first exposure being the Chris Pine/zachery Quinto versions). I let it go till right before the first space battle in Wrath of Kahn and called her over to sit with me after the battle was over she admitted that it was pretty cool and decided to watch the rest with me. At the end I began to explain to her the impact of sitting in the movie theater watching the movie in disbelief that they killed Spock and then acted like a 10 yr old version of myself ranting about it and shaking her shoulder. When I was done she said, "I have to see Search for Spock!"

At the end of "Search for Spock" I explained to her the impact of seeing them blow up the Enterprise in the movie theater and did another 10 yr old version of me ranting and shaking her shoulder and she said, "We have to watch The Voyage Home!"

We still haven't discussed the symetry between Chris Pine dying in the newer Star Trek and Leonard Nimoy dying in the older one but she is hooked. The older  child can take or leave Star Trek with the one exception of they love the scene with Kirk being borne on the space shuttle while his father pilots the Kelvin on a collision course with the romulan mining vessel from the future to give the crew a chance to escape. The birth scene is hands down their favorite.

Star Trek... is insidious! LOL. A co-worker of mine has a daughter who had to find a screen play or play for her drama class and naturally trekie dad had one of the TOS episodes, so she took it to school "no one will want to do this"... well after going over all the plays the class voted on doing the the dreaded Trek episode Foot in mouth, she then wanting to get a good grade (because she had to direct it), sat down and watched every TOS episode and is now hooked for life, and was getting ready for a Con with her friends from class just for the fun of it last time we chatted. Dad's work is done, muh wah ha ha.

After watching Wrath of Kahn thru Voyage Home my youngest now tells me she likes the original cast the best she completely disses TNG -I also picked up the complete series on DVD of that. I really hate the Shatner directed search of god movie so i have no plans of obtaining it. I might just get paterns for Star Trek uniforms and indulge the youngest. I have a sick feeling that when she discovers cosplay I'm doomed.

Watch out for cosplay. Having been to a lot of conventions of late and a lot of females are dressing up in the original Star Trek series uniforms. Miniskirts and everything.

I  have been successful in finding some movies we thought were classic, and showing them to my sons, primarily my 16-year old whol likes fantasy & SF. I've discovered that, wow, movies in the '80s were SLOW!

Conan the Barbarian and Blade Runner-- yeesh. Ladyhawke wasn't slow, but the soundtrack (which I liked apart from the movie) was a major turn-off. I have Dragonslayer in front of me, but I know that will seem slow, too. I bet if I got Excalibur, there would be the same result?

I have higher hopes for Highlander.

LOL!

I suspect it was about the Benjamins.

Imagine highlander 2 if Conroy had taken a pass and they had cast someone else? Talk about a sucky movie suching even more! I love his work but highlander 2 was such a dog.

You should be able to find a copy cheap... basically a cop comedy. James Belushi is the bad-tempered cop who does not want a partner so instead opts for a K-9 which of course the kennel gives him a K-9 no one wants.

Plus there are sequels (I have not seen them)
