Getting the kids into Sci-fi with Real Steal, the movie

My youngest has been pestering me to buy the DVD of the latest Hobbit movie (Desolation of Smaug) which is not actually out till 4/8. So I had been at Target investigating when it was coming out and looking at what they had movies to pick one up for a movie night. I picked up Real Steal and one of the Harry Potter movies that we didn't have. The kids watch Harry Potter over and over so I figured that I'd just get Real Steal for my interest.

Well we watched it last night with the kids cheering out loud during the movie at the appropriate parts. I woke this morning to the youngest watching it agian and when it was over she kept going to the scene selections and going back to the scenes in the movie with the kid dancing with the robot. She completely forgot about the Harry Potter movie (hasn't watched it yet) and told me this morning "this is a good movie!"

At some point today, I'm going to remind the kids that we have the Rockem Sockem Robots game since they haven't thought of that themselves.

Now yeah Real Steal is just Rocky done with Robots and few added wrinkles to the plot- a kid for cuteness, and hugh Jackman for likeability (though he plays a real dirt bag in the beginning with makes the point where he finds redemption sweeter since you really want to like him). and a real underdog David and Goliath story.
There are no real surprises with this movie.

Whats important here is that I've wanted to impart my love of sci fi to my kids but they dont always take to it. however as I'm typing this Rabecca back to chanting the robot's name with the people in the movie. Real Steal isn't a great movie but it was magic with my kids. In fact I was asked last night if there was a Real Steal 2. Move over Harry Potter.

If you have kids, i recommend this movie.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

LOL, they're watching the conclussion again(3 times now) and cheering out loud again.

I'm looking forward to a SF game with the kids some time soon with robots as part of the adventure. Probably something along the lines of the PCs must program and equip robots to do some fighting. maybe a Magnificent Seven or Seven Samuria sort of plot. Actually the combat encounter from FE #1 with the farmers hiring a troop of robot boxers to help them fight off some bandits.

Just asked the youngest, who is the biggest Harry Potter fan in the house if I should tell Harry Potter to move over because Real Steal is here and she said, "Yes!"

That was $10 well spent for the DVD.

EDIT: I was just remembering back to Ice Pirates since it has robots that I remember being fun in the movie but I'm not sure I want to explain the space herpie to my soon to be 8yr old and 12 yr old.

That's awesome. I love movies that get that kind of reaction from kids. Those are the movies that even when they're 40, and they've seen a couple hundred better movies, they'll still think it's one of the greatest movies ever.

So is that a vintage set or a modern/repro item? I wish I'd held onto my original set...

Modern repo, strangly my mother never bought us that game back in the day thinking it was too violent or would lead me to violence, instead she bought me something call Smash Up Derby:

(I had the beatle and pick up truck)

Based on her logic of violent game makes kids violent I wonder if I can blame my driving habbits on this game?

SSPs rocked!

I still have a few, including the demolition derby Beetle and the Nomad from that pic.

I think I had as much fun putting them back together as smashing them into each other or other things.

I recall those bumpers tended to break too easily on the demo-derby cars. Both of mine have been reduced to center stubs, and I remember a lot of the friends I played with had their demo-cars suffer similar fates.

Prime example, here's the first hit I found on eBay:
