Since I have a nutty need to get details in my game, for Knight Hawks I have several of the abbreviated titles used in the game plus some of my own. Would love to hear some of the ones other people use.

Also a discussion of how and why such titles are used and who gets to use them would work too.

UPFS---United Planetary Federation Ship
SAV---Sathar Attack Vessel
CMS---Clarion Marine Ship
ZMV---Zuraqqor Military Vessel
MLS---Mhemne Liberty Ship
DRIRM---Democratic Republic of Inner Reach Militia
MS---Malthar Ship
PGSS---Pan Galactic Star Ship
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

I agree that a 1% annual rate is rather cheap when you compare it to the typical prices of fuel, life support and storage in the canon rules, but I think if I were to translate the credit value between my campaign and the canon Frontier that 1% might be about 20%. A J-3000 light cargo transport which would be the equivalent of a hull size 3 frieghter in my Frontier costs about 1,250,000 credits off the assembly line, so the yearly upkeep is 12,500 credits, on top of which the ship's captain makes about 350cr/week +175cr/level and has to pay his crew, and figure out how to locate and buy cargo which averages between 10,000-500,000cr/ton and hope he can sell it for a profit.

Of course this little ship can accellerate at speeds of 1.5au/hour, and cruise at 3au/hour with its ion engines but that's another story.

Another way to figure cost of operation is the way insurance companies figure operation cost of automobiles. That is cost by miles of operation. They total the wear a vehicle takes with everything from how long it takes the tires to wear out, miles between oil changes, fuel efficiency, and several other factors.

This could apply to star ships in different ways such as a long haul transport which is jumping constantly to a free merchant who stops and looks for cargos and is not jumping as much. System ships would have a totally different catagory since they don't jump but all would have the life support systems taken into account which is affected by how many crew and passengers are typical. Merchants would be small liners would be huge.

Carry on with this

Okay how about we determine annual maintenance fees based on the following formula

Base cost is the same as if the ship owner was buying a new powerplant for his ship (based on the fact that a powerplant affects every ship system)

+10% of the ship's total cost to cover docking fees, and licencing fees.
+10% of the ship's engine total cost to cover fuel
+10% of the total engine's cost (if atomic) paid to the UPF atomic energy commision to certify the ship as safe, and to register it and its crew as licenced to transport radioactive and hazardous material.

Thank you for putting this info together, I am currently writing my Star Frontiers event for Garycon/Gencon and it includes a Pan-Galactic vessel as well as a UPF frigate.  Now I have the UPFS Crusader and the Pan Galactic Prometheus 1.  My Sathar destroyer uses no naming system standardized by the other united races.
