Anonymous March 17, 2008 - 2:29am | Okay, guys and gals, let's hear your thoughts on this issue of the Star Frontiersman. Lots of goodies. Lots of great art. Post your thoughts here. 70 pages of eye-popping goodness that people from other game systems are enjoying as much as Star Frontiers fans. Star Frontiersman #8 "I don't use the stuff for SF, but for Traveller, so anyone who likes SciFi should be glad to check this site out." —Treebore at Enworld.org. . |
SmootRK March 17, 2008 - 3:35am | First, I love the new Mechanons. <insert witty comment here> |
Rum Rogue March 17, 2008 - 4:50am | Awsome job Bill!! 70 pages, you defininately overdone it!! Not that im complaining... Great articles everyone. Time flies when your having rum. Im a government employee, I dont goof-off. I constructively abuse my time. |
CleanCutRogue March 17, 2008 - 5:02am | I love the dino article. It's a great submission from Corjay - it's not a set of new rules, not a bunch of new gear... it's just pure gaming content ready to drop on a saturday session with the family. I'm using it for certain! Yes, I got the same thing in my mind from the Eagle Transporter, but that's cool with me because Space 1999 had influence in my early sci-fi years! Rum Rogue helped with the Explorer Class Heavy Assault Scout's KH stats. I can't believe how much work that was! Lots of stuff in this one, but a few key articles I miss quite a bit: Adventure!, Adversaries, random maps for general use, etc. But all in all I'm happy with it or I wouldn't have finally wrapped it up :-P 3. Corjay (not verified) March 17, 2008 - 6:29am | I like the details on the Chronocom network. It helps have a solid understanding of it for basing adventures around or keeping in mind in an adventure. I like the little adventure seed at the end. Great work. I like the Yazirian lineages. I think it rounds out the Yazirian articles from previous issues. The stories all look good and I look forward to reading them when I'm ready. I like the premises of each. I like the credits-saving initiative of the Explorer Scout and the awesome deck plans. Blew my mind. I too like the Eagle Transporter and all the equipment. Great insights in the Referee information. I really like the Mechanon representations and the idea that they're not adverse to dawning ceremonial garments. It gives them character and an imperialistic feel, and the warriors could be intimidating. The drawing has inspired me so that when mechanon are needed I'll know how to draw them and even provide interesting variations of them. Once again, I love the adds. Was that a little nod to Smoot in the Precision Memory Removal? And I like the details for the gun provided, like an equipment article disguised as an ad. Finally, I both love and hate the ship cards. I love them because they're easy to use and make for great boardgame combat. I hate them because they remind me of how limited KH ship construction is. All-in-all, another great offering. |
SmootRK March 17, 2008 - 6:43am | Not me... I believe you are thinking of TheWebTroll <insert witty comment here> |
Procene March 17, 2008 - 9:07am | I haven't had a chance to dig into the issue, just glanced over it...but I am so glad there is new info on the Mechanons! I think they are one of the most intriguing races in the game, and bady underdeveloped. Plus, I hated the illustration in Zebulon's. Can't wait to dig in! Bill, once again, you have done great! |
Procene March 17, 2008 - 9:31am | One other thing...I loved the artwork for the Gorlians! It looks great! Thanks Corjay!! |
Corjay (not verified) March 17, 2008 - 9:59am | Meh. Missing a digit on each limb. :) |
Gergmaster March 17, 2008 - 10:44am | Missed some of the equipment I had submitted from month previous. Oh well next issue then. Confucious Says: Man with one chopstick go hungry. Man who eat many prunes get good run for money. Man who live in glass house should change clothes in basement. |
SmootRK March 17, 2008 - 10:48am | I also had some omitted material, which makes me happy that #9 has a head start. Missed some of the equipment I had submitted from month previous. Oh well next issue then. <insert witty comment here> |
Corjay (not verified) March 17, 2008 - 10:54am | Oh yeah, I loved the Eric "The Mouse" Stromm image. It's so much better than anything I was coming up with. I was basing mine more off of the program-created version instead of thinking outside the box. |
CleanCutRogue March 17, 2008 - 12:05pm | SmootRK, Gergmaster... Yours wasn't the only material submitted. I'll sadly have to admit that I did a poor job of organizing submissions this time. My new position and life changes made me sloppy. If I omitted it, I probably no longer have it... sadly. As soon as I have the submissions system in place (very soon... please join the discussion going on here) PLEASE resubmit? I didn't cut anyone's stuff based on content or anything... I just sucked this time because my time is getting consumed. :( 3. We wear sungoggles during the day. Not because the sun affects our

SmootRK March 17, 2008 - 12:12pm | I certainly didn't mean to make it sound like I was mfff'd about it. Unfortunately, I was hoping that you had the article on artisan skills. My laptop failed a save vs gravity and hit a tile floor hard... it is out of commission (broken LCD screen and more), and I do not have a unit to drop the Harddrive into to get my files. I need to purchase some sort of external USB Harddrive converter of some sort, but I have not done any research on that yet either. Like I said, It will still be good for #9. Its all good! <insert witty comment here> |
Gergmaster March 17, 2008 - 12:13pm | No it's ok man. Always other issues.... Thats why I am not upset. But, I do have to say that this issue is pretty good. Like the one on the communications satellites and such. A little bit of realism is what I like to have in my games, and it helps. Confucious Says: Man with one chopstick go hungry. Man who eat many prunes get good run for money. Man who live in glass house should change clothes in basement. |
Gullwind March 17, 2008 - 5:08pm | Yes, the Eagle Transporter was based on the Space:1999 ship. It's always been a favorite of mine and it seems to fit right in to this setting. I actually have a model of one that I based the drawing off of. "Rome didn't build an empire by having meetings. They did it by killing those who stood in their way." |
umungus March 17, 2008 - 5:16pm | I just got a chance to print it out. Plan on seriously reading through it tonight. Ran a game last night. My son already wants to play a Mechanon. Would like to try out the ablative damage. Overall lots of cool stuff. At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy...... |
CleanCutRogue March 17, 2008 - 9:14pm | The ablative damage thing worked great in play. It really is the same, mechanically. It basically divides damage out over ten locations but divides each pool by 10... but it's simple to play in-game. I like it a LOT and will probably continue to play that way in my home games. 3. Corjay (not verified) March 17, 2008 - 9:26pm | By the way, why is it called "Ablative"? I had to look up the word, and what I got was that it removes. So it means "removing damage"? Is that referring to the recovery rate for "bludgeoning slash" damage? Or is it referring to marking off the boxes? |
CleanCutRogue March 17, 2008 - 10:51pm | it's referring to the fact that it's marking off damage boxes. It's really a term used in engineering, so maybe I should avoid work jargon. When discussing mechanical integrity, a material that can easily wear away by casual use is referred to as an ablative substance. I just called it that because it reminded me of that. TO be honest, the existing pool of points from keeping track of current STA can be said to be ablative in the same comparitive way I used the term for damage boxes haha... it's just a name. Better than "Damage Boxes" as an article name. :-) 3. We wear sungoggles during the day. Not because the sun affects our

Corjay (not verified) March 18, 2008 - 6:31am | Huh huh. Me smurt. (Where's the bucktooth emoticon when you need it? ) |
umungus March 18, 2008 - 7:39am | I'm not sure what you meant by critical hit. It is in the part about using solid armor. When you said it represents armor having gaps... At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy...... |
CleanCutRogue March 18, 2008 - 7:53am | That was the second option for armor, assuming the armor reduces wound damage to bruise/bludgeon damage. In that case, a critical hit (normally in SF, a critical hit is a roll of 01-05, but I always use a roll of doubles so that higher chance to hit means higher chance of rolling a critical hit) will ignore the armor and cause wound damage normally. I'm not sure what you meant by critical hit. It is in the part about using solid armor. When you said it represents armor having gaps... For example: Greevo is wearing a helmet. His opponent shoots him with a gyrojet rifle in the head. Normally, the gyrojet rifle will cause 3dX damage (that is, 3d10 wound, each die causing a wound damage box if it rolls >5). Since Greevo is helmeted, though, the damage will be converted to bludgeon since it was a hit to the head (meaning it will do 3d/ damage instead of 3dX). If the attacker rolled a critical hit, though, the helmet would be ignored. 3. We wear sungoggles during the day. Not because the sun affects our

umungus March 18, 2008 - 5:06pm | Thanks for the example. I get it now. I like the idea of using the other method. Rolling an 8 or higher for damage. We use the combat armor a lot in our games from SF5. What about rolling a 6 or higher for light armor and a 7 or higher for medium and 8 or higher for heavy? At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy...... |
umungus March 18, 2008 - 5:12pm | Which method do you prefer? At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy...... |
CleanCutRogue March 18, 2008 - 8:52pm | I like the idea of using the other method. Rolling an 8 or higher for damage. We use the combat armor a lot in our games from SF5. What about rolling a 6 or higher for light armor and a 7 or higher for medium and 8 or higher for heavy? If you want to have different levels of armor, light/medium/heavy, for example, then I'd use 6, 7, and 8 as you describe. I don't think anyone should ever have higher than a damage protection value of more than 8 though... nobody is THAT protected. 3. We wear sungoggles during the day. Not because the sun affects our

fallensaviour March 18, 2008 - 9:54pm | This is such a cool addition. Thanks so very much for all your hard work and to everyone who submitted. There is so much cool stuff in there it will probably keep me busy for a long, long, long time....Dinos,ships,new races,Clans....I mean I love this book. |
Corjay (not verified) March 19, 2008 - 7:18am | Ack. I spotted another spelling error in the dino article. Under Retributisaur, it should say "ladder-like" instead of "latter-like". And Riclaw should say "ripclaw is a lean...". |
umungus March 19, 2008 - 10:24am | Cool! Thanks Rogue. At least I got to scare an alien rabbit thingy...... |
CleanCutRogue March 20, 2008 - 12:24am | Cool! Thanks Rogue. 3. We wear sungoggles during the day. Not because the sun affects our
