jedion357 July 18, 2017 - 12:58pm | I'm on a 12 hour layover at LAX coming from Anchorage going to Boston. (I can comfortably rate the restrooms at LAX as the worst I've seen in an airport) One of my life rules is "Never eat gas station sushi." Absolutely never. I'm told if I make the hike to the international terminal I could get sushi for lunch but I'm wondering where airport sushi relates to gas station sushi? Any opinions? How would issues we encounter in air ports translate to star ports? Is there"sushi" in the Frontier? Maybe it's a yazerian delicasy? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
JCab747 July 18, 2017 - 6:28pm | I never heard of gas station sushi. Airport sushi? You'd have to be the best judge of what the establishment looks like. Sushi in the Frontier? Most definitely. A Yazarian version? Yep. That sounds very plausible. Joe Cabadas |
AZ_GAMER July 18, 2017 - 10:07pm | Best rule i have found when it comes to Sushi (which I love) is if you can see the sushi chef prepare it with fresh ingredients in your presence or in your sight you should be fine. If the chef (or not so chef) is not confident enough to prepare it where you can see them work then the sushi may not be good or safe. There of course are some exceptions where it is a resturant you trust but most reputable sushi resturants take pride in their work and show off their skill and product by preparing it where it can be seen. |
Shadow Shack July 19, 2017 - 6:55am | As one who prefers his seafood to be cooked prior to eating, I really can't differentiate between gas station sushi and five star sushi. ;) |

jedion357 July 20, 2017 - 6:19am | I've seen pre made (I believe in a factory) pre packaged sushi in a convenience store gas station. The same packaging turns up in a Shaw's supermarket as well in the Northeast. The quality is extremely suspect. I would have to agree: the rule of thumb should be if you can see the chef making it. I recently had a Carribean Cowboy at a sushi place: very thinnly shaved beef (very pink) with mango as a new take on sushi and it's good. Note not all sushi is raw fish: California rolls, avocado rolls, spider making and any veggie rolls I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
SFAndroid July 20, 2017 - 10:47am | Sushi, yum. That Caribbean Cowboy sounds like Carpaccio. Italians do it with a little garlic and olive oil. Again, yum. You can't argue with the invincibly ignorant. - William F. Buckley |
Shadow Shack July 20, 2017 - 7:14pm | Vegetables are what food eats. I've had Cali-rolls before, they're okay for when you actually crave what food eats. I'm just an old fashioned meat & potatoes guy though. Having worked the F&B industry for half my life, I do see why folks can be attracted to sushi...it's just not for me. |

Nothing wrong with that, when you boil it down all a man really needs is meat, potatoes and loving. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Shadow Shack July 21, 2017 - 6:43pm | Which is why I'm such a happy guy. Or at least once was, doc said I had to cut the carbs a few years back. No more rice, pasta, potatoes, or bread. I was never a rice eater, pasta wasn't difficult to give up...potatoes took a long time to get over (although I still cheat about two to four times a month), but bread...........dear God in heaven do I ever love bread. That's been a tough one. |

That's been a tough one. Damn that sucks. I bake, love to bake. Favorite is fougassi from southern France; sauted onions and crumbled bacon kneaded into the dough and parmesan cheese sprinkled on top while its rising. If you cut into it when its hot out of the oven "for just one slice" with butter you're gonna eat half the loaf. Wow, Shadow, I"d rather become a sathar agent then give up good bread. (Note: white bread is like cheap beer not worth the money). I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Shadow Shack July 23, 2017 - 7:02am | Back when I was in college I stocked up on four things: Mountain Dew (eight packs of 16oz glass bottles --- long before anyome had heard of HFCS), bread, butter, and gravy. Combining the last three was always quick, satisfying, and filling. |
iggy July 23, 2017 - 8:41am | Back when I was in college I married a food science major and I have rediscovered many times over the years the wisdom of letting her set my diet. Now the big effort is in exercise. We have to keep the activity so that we can continue to eat the variety we want and not become starvation dieters. My wife is also a farm girl and when we compare our city lifestyle to her parent's and sibling's country lifestyles, their activity levels keep the homemade rolls and potatoes safely in their diets. My wife's homemade bread and rolls are to die for so I exercise now so I can keep eating them with running butter. -iggy |
Shadow Shack July 23, 2017 - 1:38pm | My wife makes homemade bread on occasion (she really isn't helping the problem ), every now and then I'll have her roll out a flatbread pizza crust for me to finish up w/toppings (my fave is old world pepperoni): ...and the obligatory pasta I gave up, lasagna alfredo: Thanksgiving & Christmas are always a time to #### the diet and fall back to classic meat & potatoes: |
iggy July 24, 2017 - 12:39am | The cool thing about food scientists is they love to make there own food. I get old school goodness and very little processed food. I get to have the good stuff that dietitians and nutritionists restrict becasue it gets made with fresh ingredients and without the processed food substitute ingredients. The other good thing is my wife has kept us on realistic portions not the oversized marketing driven portions. As a result I usually can't eat everything on my plate at a restaurant. I'm liking the look of that lasagna alfredo. I'll have to remember to request it for dinner after I get back from scout camp on Saturday. -iggy |
jedion357 July 24, 2017 - 3:12am | I worked for 9 years at an Italian bakery and caterer. I'm a little pasta'd out these days but the one thing that Spineli's had that I'm always down for was SPO (Sausage, peppers & Onion which also came with a silent unnamed partner: roasted potatoes). It always amazed me that it tasted so good and they cooked everything individually not together. cookie sheets of roasted potatoes, cookie sheets of sausage, and massive frying pans of peppers and onions. Once the sausages cooled enough to handle they were sliced and everything mixed and thrown in a pan and sent to the steam table. I always mooched SPO at least once per week. I quickly got over the pastries too except for cannolis but then we made mini cannolis and I'd limit to that but only when it was just a really tough day (4 to 5 times a year) and with coffee. Talk about comfort food: chocolate covered mini cannoli with a cup of black coffee. Back in the 90s I use to drink 2 pots of coffee a day and I had started gaining a little wt. So I had started cutting back on portions and I cut all milk creamer and sugar from my coffee figuring that would be a significant ammount of calories. Today I drink 2-4 cups of coffee but cant stomach milk or sugar in it. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Shadow Shack July 24, 2017 - 6:50am | I've never been a fan of coffee but when I need it --- I work mornings so I probably nab a cup about once a week, usually on Monday --- I take it the way I like my women: straight and strong. |
