JCab747 July 17, 2017 - 2:00pm | I read a story on the hoopla. To me, if you want a sci fi show with a strong woman character -- make a new one or even use the same universe like they did in Star Trek by creating Star Trek Voyager. Unless the Time Lords are Dralasites or Humma, who change their genders, or Satharoids (who are hermaphrodites), the only reason given for doing this in the Doctor Who universie is because the BBC wants to be more diverse. Of course, isn't the Doctor a few regenerations over his/her limit now? (Sorry, I haven't watched the latest incarnations so I'm sure I missed the reasons given in the series). Anyway, that's my two credits worth. Joe Cabadas |
Sargonarhes July 17, 2017 - 5:24pm | Haven't watched it in years, don't really plan on watching it now or in the future. In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same. |
Shadow Shack July 17, 2017 - 6:54pm | I take it this is referring to Politically Correct Dr. Who... |
SFAndroid July 18, 2017 - 6:22am | BBC has fast-tracked the PC movement. I won't get into all of the issues, as to not upset folks here, but when you open a line of jobs and say "White Males need not apply", you get the gist of the problem. I stopped watching the show last season, as the new companion was as irritating beyond watchability. I was hoping they'd get rid of her with the new regeneration. Unfortunately, they jumped in the PC hole with both feet and did a bender on the Doctor. I've watched Dr. Who since the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker, for those who aren't familiar). It's sad to stop, but I can't stomach this. Reading the forums about the Doctor, if the opinions hold, the show will have NO ratings. For every positive reaction, there are close to 200 negative ones. Joe, as far as regenerations go, Matt Smith should have been the last Doctor. However, he got hit with a load of regeneration energy in one of the specials, so theoretically, he could have 12 more. You can't argue with the invincibly ignorant. - William F. Buckley |
Shadow Shack July 18, 2017 - 6:59am | I've never seen a single episode of Dr. Who --- although I am a bit intrigued by some of the older stuff --- but the PC movement is not swaying me to change that. I am something of a Fantastic Four fan, and despite the two cheese-fests that were released I have yet to see the rebooted Politically Correct Four. Ditto for Politically Correct Trek. There seems to be a pattern here with third releases... I am also quite positive had it not been for the politically correct movement we would have been exposed to at least five more reboots of the Dukes of Hazzard (in addition to the two or three flicks that did make it out before that happened). Considering how those flicks made the Fantastic Four look like Oscar material, I'm not sure if I should be thankful for that or not. |
SFAndroid July 18, 2017 - 8:29am | Netflix has (I think they still do) a lot of the old stuff. So much was lost, as the BBC recorded over old tapes, thinking no one wanted to see the rerun. They did find over 150 episodes in Malaysia, but they're in sorry shape. They're being worked over to see if they can be reclaimed. If you want to start new, start with Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor. IMO, David Tennant is the best one of the series, hands down. I really wish the establishment would stop catering to the minority. To talk about the "make new shows" bit, take a look at Killjoys and Dark Matter. Both have EXTREMELY strong female leads and characters...and both are really great shows. Technology is believable (more in KJ than DM, but doable), stories are entertaining and I think the acting is quite good. Who would have a cow if they rebooted Veronica Mars as Victor Mars? Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Billy? Yea, you get the drift. You can't argue with the invincibly ignorant. - William F. Buckley |
JCab747 July 18, 2017 - 9:19am | I loved the Tom Baker version of the Doctor. Let's see, shall we have a black Jamie Bond? Jamie Kirk? Theresa Magnum, PI? A reboot of Stargate where you flip the male-female roles among other things? Yes, some "entertainment" is becoming unwatchable and simply not very fun if it is run by a socio-political agenda. jedion357 July 18, 2017 - 12:26pm | For myself, I'm waiting for a politically correct reboot of Blazing Saddles: "Hey, where are the white transgendered at?" Seriously, though if the show's producers are explicitly being "preachy" it will probably suck witness Star Trek V, Shatner's sermonette on TV evangelism to which the studio should have applied a quote from the script, "Please Will, not in front of the fans." Sure it was not PC but it sucked like PC. The point being that heavy handed pushing of agenda typically sucks the goodness out of an entertainment property. Side note: I was just reading about a Minnesota Senator (Hoffman: Labor Party) who introduced a measure to a larger bill to change the "racist" name of Asian carp to invasive carp. The bill will infringe on the free speech of Minnesota Fish and Game personnel requiring them to call the carp "invasive carp" . It was also suggested that since Caucasians brought them that maybe they should be called Caucasian Carp. Which is fine but since Im of Canadian descent I'd like to know when we're going to do something about "Canadian Geese." I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 July 18, 2017 - 12:31pm | I just had a thought: how long till autocorrect algorithms are rewritten to not only totally screw with your posts but also politically correct them? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 July 18, 2017 - 12:41pm | Oh, wait, I rabbit trailed, the original question was about Doctor who? Haven't watched since U of Maine in '86 when someone else had control of the remote in the student lounge and I'm sitting there wondering when we might see some real sci-fi. [Please no flame war on whether it's real sci-fi as it clearly is, that was purely my 18-19 yr old reaction to first seeing it]. At anyrate I'm not terribly invested in the property so I might enjoy a feamale Dr. With the important questions being will she be blond, brunette or Auburn haired, show some leg and will we see her in bed with a love interest. This might work if HBO was to take over and do it's usual "we must have T&A and almost soft core porn for the sake of having T&A." I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
JCab747 July 18, 2017 - 6:19pm | Doctor Who is more like sci fi escapism. Anyway, the new doctor looks like this: Not bad. The show will survive if they have good scripts, though I loath them (the BBC) plunging over (even more than they already do) into the world of white males need not apply here. If they want a female time lord, then create a new character! Joe Cabadas |
JCab747 July 18, 2017 - 6:30pm | Oh, just in case I'm accused of judging an actress by her looks, here's how some of the other male Doctors looked: Joe Cabadas |

Let's see, shall we have a black Jamie Bond? Sad but true, Gollywood was pitching a black James Bond so black Jamie is the inevitable next step. Which would actually be okay for the X rated Jane Bondage reboot, but not for the big screen thank you very much. Seriously, the best way to whip out a black spy or even a black female spy flick is to do it the Marvel way: fabricate an African nation's intelligence branch a la Wakanda/Black Panther, much like Ian Fleming did with his fictional Q Branch of MI-6 and just have an original story that works. Sadly originality is a dead art form these days so we'll just suffer through more PC reboots. |

Joe, as far as regenerations go, Matt Smith should have been the last Doctor. However, he got hit with a load of regeneration energy in one of the specials, so theoretically, he could have 12 more. We don't actually know that he got another bundle of twelve regenerations. He might have gotten just two, or two hundred. |
jedion357 July 20, 2017 - 6:37am | What's odd is that the doctor has been regen'd as a white male so much it makes the female doctor stand out even more. They would have been better off with making a new doctor. It's so obviously a concession to pc it detracts from the story before you even see the story. In DS9 you had Judzea Dax who went through male and female hosts to the Dax symbiant. This was written into the characters bedrock. And when a past female lover of a male host showed up it wasnt a big deal of " we're exploring lesbian themes" but rather organic story features. With the doctor the bed rock of the character has been male for so long that this is going to be weird. And I agree, good writing will keep it going. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
