jedion357 March 9, 2017 - 5:45pm | Recently encountered"Edge of Tomorrow" which is in my estimation a mash up of Ground Hog Day meets Aliens. We all know Hollywood is notorious for doing remakes that don't need to be done and screwing it up. But I'm rather taken with this somewhat remake of Groundhog Day, a classic I rather liked. So my question is classic movie Mash ups as sci Fi adventures: what's your suggestion? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 March 9, 2017 - 5:49pm | I'm working on the classic, Sandpebbles . Recently, saw it for first time and it's a small-ish ship facing challenges which can work for a KHs/AD adventure campaign. Not sure what to mash it with but I'm sure something will come up. EDIT: the thing about the movie Sandpebbles is that you need a somewhat hostile setting and not many planets in the Frontier lend themselves to be a stand in for imperial China. Outer Reach with its criminal warlords, Volturnus possibly (although I'm not sure how), and Hentz with the autocratic Fo1 come to mind. And I'm leaning toward non space fleet vessel. Mercenary or militia but craft the situation so that players are less constrained by a chain of command. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Shadow Shack March 10, 2017 - 7:53am | It wasn't a movie back then, but when I was younger I specced out a lot of the GIJoe stuff albeit with alternate names for the personalities and equipment and made them a pirate faction. I made them a serpentine race using false human skin to blend in a la the original V series. |
Sargonarhes March 11, 2017 - 6:12am | Before Groundhog Day there was the anime Urusei Yatsura 2 Beautiful Dreamer, where the gang kept living the same day repeatedly until they took action to change that day. Then things kept getting stranger until they started to realize they were living in some one's dream, but then had to figure out who's dream it was. I've gamed an Aliens with a mix of Starship Troopers. Yep, xenomorphs vs powered armor, greatest blood bath gaming there ever was. Of course I did this before the Starship Troopers movie came out, I was basing this off the book and every one thought I was mixing anime suits into it. Well it's more or less true as anime treats powered armor more like hardware than hollywood makes it superhero stuff. In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same. |
jedion357 March 13, 2017 - 7:13am | I got it: mashup Sand Pebbles and Predator PCs have the struggles aof managing an ill maintained small ship, rescuing UPF civilians on Outer Reach and dealing with an Alien predator which could even be an evil mechanon. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 March 13, 2017 - 7:49am | Silent Running and 1984 lost yazirian ag ship from the star exodus facing destruction because it threatens the monopoly of the Fo1 and GODco which control the genetic samples ark on Hentz. Fo1 of course is cast in the role of "Big Brother" watching you. 1984 is perhaps a poor choice for this mash up but it was what comes to mind when you think heavy handed big authority. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
