Second Look at the MSO

In the Gospel according to Zebulon's Guide we find

23 FY The Meical Services Organization is founded. Funding pours in from most of the Frontier Worlds. Gretl Grohn is named as MSO Chief Surgeon.

24 FY Vaccine for the Blue Plague is discovered at the MSO center on Morgaine's World.

First impression:

Gretl Grohn is a dralasite. I see the name Grohn and dralasite comes to mind.
should in not be Surgeon General instead of Cheif Surgeon? Chief surgeon sounds like the top guy at a hospital but this is the top medical official for the Frontier sector so I'm going to advocate for Surgeon General (or the Frontier Surgeon General) and why not this is the oft despised sand sometime heretical Zeb's Guide that is the source.

That was pretty fast- to organize a new organization and get up and running and develop a vaccine for a major health threat all in one year! Whoa that is fast.

So what are the organization divisions of the MSO?

Research is an obvious one.

Reponse Teams - travel to a medical crisis and investigate

disaster relief- Red Cross sort of stuff?
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Maybe Gretl Grohn and his team had already been fighting the blue plague and had become very close but needed more funding to complete, test, and cross it to all species.  Gretl campaigned to get the funding and got more than he hoped for.  The politicians stuck him with responsibility to found the MSO that the citizens were asking for and they didn't want to risk owning incase of failure.  The chances of failure would have been pretty high.  Anyway Gretl gets the job but only a lateral title change at first because the MSO staff is initially small and on a shoestring operating budget.  Politically after the success the MSO is enlarged and Gretl's title changes to Surgeon General.

Conspiracy Theory: conspiring pre-MSO coordinaters created the Blue Plague in order to secure funding for their future organization and, miraculously, a year after their debut they come out with the vaccine (which they already had from the get-go) to justify their operation.
I'm not overly fond of Zeb's Guide...nor do I have any qualms stating why. Tongue out

Look at the realworld structure of the Centers for Disease Control for a model of how MSO might be structured?

This depends- if they had the vaccine from the get go they would have certainly immunized themselves with it. then you get the urge to protect your family. and extended family. Too many lips and this ship sinks.

It is certainly a plausible scneario, one that wouldn't require pre-immunization. It's the backstory behind one of the Mission Impossible flicks, both the disease and cure were created simultaneously with the intent of one mandating the other --- re: Chimera (the disease) and Bellerophon (the cure).

Said MI flick was the first thing that came to mind when I read the opening post. ;)

I like Exiles' contributions

7 or 8 years ago I came across a university web site that presented as a game an health out break in a third world country and you played the investigator. I may have been using the search words "alien entymology" when I found it. At any rate I thought is was a good basis for developing an rpg investigation.

at the back of my mind I always wanted to get around to doing a MSO researcher sent to outpost colony forced to deal with problems etc.

I can never seem to find the one based at the university but this is from the CDC:

Anyone ever see Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman? The disease and cure were both well know and on hand before the outbreak. Then that funny thing called evolution and mutation worked its natural magic on the situation and you had the plot to the movie. Same thing could have happened to the Blue Plague.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Yep, an earlier parallel plot like I mentioned from the MI flick.

As far as conspiracy theories go, it's a feasible one to run with...much like the modern day ongoing CT about AIDS being man made.

All the dissemination of the cure would have to be by subspace radio.  By the time actual vaccine could be physically shipped most planets would bp dead.  Whole Frontier of "plague planets".

Good point.  The MSO needs labs on each planet so they can make vaccines by instruction on site.  Another reason for the title and position change once the MSO gets established.
