ChrisDonovan September 16, 2016 - 4:21pm | I struggled through my first story arc and finished back in late May/early June. Then came a huge run of scheduling conflicts and RL concerns for both my players on top of a huge writer's block problem for me, and now all the momentum is gone. One of my players is perfectly happy playing tactical board games, and the other all of a sudden got a huge jones to play Trek. My only consolation is that at least I can get him to run some Trek. I couldn't interest him at all in running SF, even after basically giving him copies of every module and rulebook I could find online plus both magazines. Sigh..... |
Shadow Shack September 16, 2016 - 7:21pm | Simple solution: convince him that Trek is for grognards. SF is for grognards in training . ;) |
ChrisDonovan September 16, 2016 - 8:03pm | Heh, if only it were that simple. Part of the problem is that he doesn't want to put in the time to really learn a new system and a new setting in order to run something. I suppose that's a fair point, given the I struggled with it so badly myself. |

ChrisDonovan September 17, 2016 - 8:30am | ^To be fair to him, he doesn't have a lot of time or spare creative energy. He writes professionally and that takes up most of his time/creativity. |

jedion357 September 19, 2016 - 11:33am | Tell him, SF is/was Firefly 25 years before there was a Firefly. People are Trekkies because they watched and enjoyed the shows. If he's enjoyed Firefly/Serenity then that is your in. SF would have been bigger if it had had a TV show or movie or two. A lot of things come close with the caveat that artificial gravity has been the go to solution for filming a space ship show on earth. Your problem with winning a new convert is presentation. Giving someone a stack of modules, rule books, and fan magazines to "check out" equates to a stack of crap for them to read. And unless they are fans it's roll the eyes time. Grab a movie like Alien or Aliens, Firefly/ Serenity, or a host of others and say were playing this and to match the style of the movie we just going to use the SF rules since they better suit the flavor for this particular brand of Pringle. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
ChrisDonovan September 19, 2016 - 4:32pm | He's already played (and enjoyed) the game itself, he's just not interested in running it, or keeping it going unless I do all the GMing for it. He'd rather run Star Trek when he runs, and one he runs he wants to play likewise. I don't mind running, provided I get to play too. Hence the problem. |

It's hard to be a batter and an umpire in the same game. I understand. Joe Cabadas |
Shadow Shack September 19, 2016 - 7:11pm | I prefer GMing to playing, mostly because it permits me to control more than one character. I love whipping up some challenging antagonists for my players, and I even lament the loss of well thought out NPCs as much as I might lament the loss of a PC. Alas, I've always subscribed to the theory that a good hero is not defined by his/her deeds, rather the hero is best defined by a good villain. As such I go out of my way to ensure my lead villains are awesome bad guys. After all while very few people remember Dablak the Enforcer, EVERYONE has a lasting impression of his boss (the Malthar). As it should be with any self-written adventure. |
