Not myself, but doesn't mean others won't be.

well the only *real* need I wanted this for was Smoot's baby.

...but not sure if it's overkill for the site. I can see where others might not
directly contribute to the site but want to know when a project they are interested in
is updated.

of course if I was subscribed to the 25th Ani project I would enable spam filtering.

In any highly active project, you'd be getting update notifications constantly.  So then I'd have to set up different settings... "notify me whenever updated" "notify me when a new download is availble" "notify me when someone comments to this topic" "notify me when..." the list would go on and on lol...

I don't know how much I'm willing to provide on this.  If you are waiting for info regarding a project - a project manager has the ability to send project announcements that arrive in the form of PMs.  If you have your PM notification enabled - then you'd get an email notifying you of the PM.  I think that's pretty decent options, more than many sites.

But in the general forums, there is no option like that.  I can see it being a nice wish-list feature, and I'll look into it.

Well, let's say you turn notification "on" for that project without all these options. Just one option: on or off.

I would recommend a once daily notifcation for any activity on the project or maybe one document upate notification daily and one forum reply notification daily and ONLY if anything was posted of course.

Maybe you could just have the site send one update a day for all projects and forums that the person is signed up to receive notifications on or maybe link it to their notification amount in their profile.
