ChrisDonovan February 1, 2016 - 7:28pm | I'm getting both my "design" legs and my "wiki" legs under me and I have two new articles: and I'd love it if you checked them out. |
Shadow Shack February 1, 2016 - 11:45pm | Ark 2! I vaguely recall that show...I had to google it to reaffirm my suspicions. I rendered my Heavy Duty Explorers as trackmobiles, but of similar size & purpose including space for a pair of cycles or small AWD ground car. |
KRingway February 2, 2016 - 1:09am | I think the ol' Ark II would have problems negotiating various off-road situations - especially ditches! There are various interesting designs here: http://www.unusuallocomotion.com/ |
ChrisDonovan February 2, 2016 - 7:48am | I rendered my Heavy Duty Explorers as trackmobiles, but of similar size & purpose including space for a pair of cycles or small AWD ground car. If I were to do a generic "heavy explorer", would you consider allowing that to be in the gallery? |
jedion357 February 2, 2016 - 8:35am | I like the Damnation Alley vehicle. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Shadow Shack February 2, 2016 - 10:06am | If I were to do a generic "heavy explorer", would you consider allowing that to be in the gallery? Go for it. |

I like the Damnation Alley vehicle. There was a lot of speculation that the Landmaster was retrofitted/repainted for Ark 2, but they are completely different vehicles. |
ChrisDonovan February 2, 2016 - 1:07pm | The Ark was a partial re-use of the skin of the full-size mockup of the Seeker from Space Academy/Jason of Star Command built onto (IIRC) a dump or trash truck chassis. I seem to have gotten into a disagreement with Sings-with-Spirits over at the wiki over the Jetpack. She maintains it's nothing but a wingless glijet, then complains that it's too overpowered and unrealistic for the setting. I can't seem to get through to her that a) fully powered flight is NOT the same as a couple of minutes of powered flight followed by hang-gliding and b) it's using the same technology as hover and air vehicles that are a lot faster not to mention longer ranged. I don't know what more I can say to her. Could a couple of you take a look and see where my explanation to her goes wrong? Side note, I think I found the design ancestor of the explorer. Google: UNIMOG. |

I think I found the design ancestor of the explorer. Google: UNIMOG. Here are a few modern day interpretations: |
jedion357 February 2, 2016 - 6:05pm | I like this "concept" UNIMOG as an actual SF vehical,
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Malcadon February 3, 2016 - 2:37am | LOL The talk about the Arc II and Landmaster, along with the editing on the SF Wiki, reminds me of one of the pages on my Mutant Future Wiki, where I or someone else, added both in Modern Ground Vehicles. (Editing in the MFW is nicer, as I don't have to be constrained with game canon, but damn is it loanly!) |
ChrisDonovan February 3, 2016 - 8:02am | I think that Sings and me are going to be "good" if not now, then soon. I took some of her points on board and I'm tweaking the Jetpack article accordingly. At any rate, this is the image I saw that made me think UNIMOG = Explorer It's of the right vintage to be the inspiration (1975). |
Shadow Shack February 3, 2016 - 1:28pm | Bigfoot was also a product of 1975, put those two together and you have an explorer. Speaking of which, there was also a Bigfoot trackmobile... |
