Could this be the starrt of a 21st Century Air Car?

Notice that the batteries limit the range quite a bit.

Interesting,
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Yeah, I could see that being considered an "air car" of sorts.

Except air cars are fast. Wink

Range isn't the only limitation of electric vehicles. Speed and refueling times are two more issues. Like I said...air cars are fast.

Also noteworthy, the video depicts a vehicle with a different prop arrangement.

In think this might be a timid first step toward the air car. What just occurred to me is that when they are able to "Henry Ford" these you could see the development of flying IEDs that would carry enough explosive to make a real splash.

I am entirely thinking of this as only a timid first step toward a future of aircars.  The performance of this vehicle is no where near what it needs to be.  The biggest hurdle however is how to deal with the average joe flying over anything and everything.  There are big safety concerns.

An even bigger hurdle, as hinted at by the battery life, is whether the props lock up or if they're on a clutch that allows them to spin freely once power is lost. Play with an R/C drone or one of those cheap helicopters enough and you'll find anytime you release the throttle they fall like rocks.

One other problem with this design is that it lacks wings, and if there's a complete engine failure I'm not sure the props would be very good in terms of autogyration. So, there's no real way of attempting an emergency gliding landing if something bad happens to the engines.

Aside from that, it doesn't scream 'aircar' at me as a design. If it had shrouded fans then perhaps it would, but a scaled up drone seems like something diffferent.

Here is an interesting little tidbit to see where the company making this vehicle wants to go. Millionaires in San Paulo, Brazil like to fly around in helicopters to avoid the massive traffic jams in the streets below. Other cities with massive traffic problems, lots of upper tier wealth people and tall buildings like New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong could have a market for this vehicle.

In SF terms while it might not be the aircar we have in the game it is a step toward a technology they did not include in the original game. The other forum about technology lock in SF should take a gander and decide if this is something that should fit into SF.

Personally I can see this vehicle in wide use by the upper management of a certain Entertainment Megacorp in their home city of Maze.

Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

More so if one were to utilize my model of Minotaur where the equatorial spanning mega-city has no actual streets or street level. Air cars, jetcopters, air transports, and flit boards are the mainstay of commuter traffic in such an environment (not to mention multi-level monorail & tram routes).
