SFAndroid January 19, 2016 - 2:37pm | So, who's watching "The Expanse"? I've only watched a couple of episodes, but so far, I think it's pretty decent, lots of hard sci-fi. Look forward to seeing what the rest of the SF community thinks. You can't argue with the invincibly ignorant. - William F. Buckley |
iggy January 19, 2016 - 6:03pm | I don't have cable so I haven't had a chance. -iggy |
Shadow Shack January 19, 2016 - 8:08pm | I caught the pilot episode and have to say it's a refreshing addition to the usual fare for the SyFy channel --- which typically runs no-talent (or forgotten talent at best) multiple shark/crocodile/dinosaur/insect hybrid type monster movies throughout the week. I'm probably too far behind to catch up now so I'll have to watch a collected format of it in the future. On a related note I've spent the last few weeks revisiting V (original mini series, the Final Battle, and both runs of the TV series). I fell in love with Jane Badler all over again. |
iggy January 19, 2016 - 8:39pm | I saw some stuff of it at CES and it looked really interesting. I get the feeling it tries to stay more science fiction than science fantasy. The ships looked well thought out to science not like Star Trek that just started making science up for plot reasons. -iggy |
KRingway January 21, 2016 - 4:08pm | Try as I might, I can't get into it. Some of the visuals are interesting but the rest of it seems pretty much by the numbers. Mind you, I still think that - often as not - Red Dwarf did a better job with exploring various sci-fi tropes than is the case with many 'serious' TV sci-fi shows. And the serious ones tend to be less rewarding to one's brain in terms of ideas to play with than, say, your average stock Star Frontiers or Traveller adventure. |
Lucifiend January 21, 2016 - 7:09pm | I rather like Expanse, but I'm sucker for anything scifi (or SyFy, whatever that means). Admittedly it's a little slow paced if you're looking for a high adventure space romp. I'm also pretty unconcerned by bad astronomy so you can take my advice for what it's worth.

Sargonarhes January 24, 2016 - 6:46am | No cable either, so what past sci-fi is it like? It has a kind of newer BSG and B5 look to it, but guessing from comments it's no where close to them. In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same. |
Shadow Shack January 24, 2016 - 10:22am | anything scifi (or SyFy, whatever that means).
"SyFy" is what the SciFi channel changed their name to when they went from playing sci fi flicks/documentaries/etc to straight-to-video-dog-crap such as Sharknado, Piranhaconda, Dinocroc versus Supergator, etc. Prior to the name change, MST3K was the low point of that channel, but if SyFy were to bring that back it would be their high point. I mean the fact that SyFy stopped playing Star Wars and Spike channel (formerly TNN Wrestling channel and prior to that the Nashville Network or something to that effect) picked it up has to say something... The Expanse looks to be an attempt to reclaim that former SciFi name again, hopefully it's the first of many as I really used to enjoy that channel before the name change. |
Lucifiend January 24, 2016 - 12:13pm | By that logic, maybe it means a close approximation to scifi. Sciencey Fictiony? I read on IMDB that Syfy renewed Expanse for a second season, so it might be worth the bother to watch (for those wanting to avoid a Firefly/Almost Human experience). |
Shadow Shack January 24, 2016 - 8:05pm | Believe me I do intend to catch up on The Expanse. I really have no excuse for missing it each week, but somehow it just keeps happening. |
rattraveller January 27, 2016 - 12:32pm | Who the heck watches anything on cable anymore? SyFy channel puts all their shows up on the net one way or another so you can catch them there. Some you have to pay for others free or if you wait a little while most of them show up on Netflix, Hulu and/or Amazon Prime. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
Shadow Shack January 27, 2016 - 5:46pm | Call me silly but I like to watch stuff on my big screen TV with surround sound, something a laptop or cell phone can never replicate. Sure, I can run a cable from my laptop to the TV but then I'm stuck with the tinny TV speakers... |
dmoffett February 4, 2016 - 1:05pm | Call me silly but I like to watch stuff on my big screen TV with surround sound, something a laptop or cell phone can never replicate. Sure, I can run a cable from my laptop to the TV but then I'm stuck with the tinny TV speakers... Get yourself an HDMI cable, set it up properly and the sound will come out of your laptop to the TV and then the audio out from TV to the sound system. I set mine up that way. I Rip DVDs to my hard drive all the time, keeps the kids from scratching them up. Or you can use the audio jack on the laptop to go directly to the sound system via its aux input if it has one. Hope that Helps. The bombing starts in five minutes. |

All I have for audio out on my laptop is a headphone jack. I suppose I could hit Radio Shack for a headphone/RCA adapter, but those seem pretty flimsy. |
