Abub November 21, 2014 - 9:16pm | So I need to come up with 30 or so... i guess, 30 - my PCs so 24... I need to come up with 24 crew names. I've created a XLS macro to randomly pick race, gender, role stats (and randomly shift between attibute pairs) and caluculate things like PS and IM, and the RW% and MW% But it can't come up with names for me. And Vrusk Names are the worst... My random crew has 6 vrusk females and one male (one PC is a male Vrusk) Wanna name them? so far I have for the lady Vrusk Jellrin'k Uthisia Gramon'ck That is it. If you all just love coming up with names... I can list the crew's races and genders too. I've been playing Vrusks as they have family names like Humans (i've no surnames yet). Yazirians I'm probably going just just give clan names. And Drals will probably only have first names. ----------------------------------------------- |

iggy November 21, 2014 - 11:16pm | For vrusks I like to use lots of click and pop sounds with buzzes. So making words with K, T, P, V, Z,Qu, F, X, etc are good. You can take a human name and morph it into this click, pop, buz structure so that players easily nick name the vrusk with this close sounding human name. I seperate the clicks, pops, and buzzes with dashes and apostraphies like in the books. Female vrusk: Suzan - Z'tznn Sara - Tsa-Xa Veronica - V'an-Ts'Ka And I just sometimes mash a bunch of clicky pop buz stuff together that looks and sounds good. Po'Tc-Vuu I try to imagine that I have only hard mandibles and feather like appendages around my mouth to vibrate, click, and force air pass by sucking in and pushing out. Remember that vrusk don't breath through their mouths so air passing through their mouths in more swallowing and releasing air through the throat. They don't belch because they do not have to close off their throat to protect a wind pipe. Also they include wistles from their breathing spicules so vrusk speach is coming from two parts of their bodies. I won't go into the antanae and gesture portion of their speach that is not verbal as that over complicates names. -iggy |

For vrusks I like to use lots of click and pop sounds with buzzes. So making words with K, T, P, V, Z,Qu, F, X, etc are good. That, and an extremely limited use of vowels, 1:5 ratio of vowels to consanants at the minimum. Bonus points for a complete disregard of vowels altogether...my first vrusk character was named Z'xlprr. |
Abub November 22, 2014 - 7:37pm | I like the consept of taking human names and bastardizing them into vrusk names. Vrusk names are still hard. I always end up with players that gloss over vrusk names because they are damn near unpronouncable.... sort of like trying to read latin chemical ingredients in stuff, or words in a language you can't comprehend. How would you lot feel about a names thread by race? Could be useful for everybody to have race/gender name lists here. I could see it here... or would that be more something to put in a project? ----------------------------------------------- |
iggy November 22, 2014 - 8:27pm | I think we had a names thread before. But what would be best is mining any past threads and either reactivating one or continuing this one or a set seeing as this one is vrusk-ish. Then compile all of it into a document for here in a project like Core Four and submitting it to one of the magazines. Come to think of it there may have been one in SFman that this could be a part two of or a names revisited article. -iggy |
