Abub October 9, 2014 - 10:43am | So I know me and my players will to often think of using Dex instead of RS. Other than making up you initiative modifier when is s good time to use RS? I was considering using it as a stat check they roll instead of the -3 initiative mod for having weapons holstered. Like in round one of a fight assume people have shouldered / holstered weapons unless they are clear about it otherwise. And have them roll initative normally but before they get to shoot they have to roll RS. If they make it they can draw and fire quickly. If they fail they don't get to get their shot off and failed any chance for opportunity attacks. Basically reducing their shooting attemp to pull out and ready your weapon action. Bad idea? When do you choose RS instead of Dex? ----------------------------------------------- |
jedion357 October 9, 2014 - 11:31am | RS is used occassionally as a save to only recieve half damage from a particularly bad attack- certains specail attacks of creatures have RS save for 1/2 effect. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Abub October 9, 2014 - 1:06pm | Good point... i had forgotten about that. I think some grenades use RS don't they to let you take half damage. ----------------------------------------------- |
TerlObar October 9, 2014 - 1:43pm | I typically call for RS check for gross motor skills moving the entire or large parts of the body in a rapid controlled manner. So dodging grenades as per the rules, checks while driving, and your quick draw rule are good examples. I use DEX checks for fine motor skills, i.e. threading a wire through a small hole, reassembling a small object that has fallen apart, fubling for the correct key on a key ring, that type of stuff. jedion357 October 9, 2014 - 2:02pm | All of the ability scores double as saving throws. It would be more obvious in a fantasy game. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Stormcrow October 10, 2014 - 12:50pm | According to the Alpha Dawn expanded rules, Dexterity has to do with sensing things by touch (!), throwing, catching, balance, jumping, and fine motor skills. Reaction Speed is all about quickness. |

All of the ability scores double as saving throws. This. Although there are many D&D aficionados who dislike ability checks, but it still works the same. |
Malcadon October 10, 2014 - 10:42pm | I never liked the name "Reaction Speed (RS)". I would rather call it "Reflexes (REF)". It is the same stat, but the name fits with the attribute names, and it sounds better. |
Shadow Shack October 11, 2014 - 12:54am | ...and with a bad d% roll during character generation it can also stand for Really Slow. |
