jedion357 August 5, 2014 - 4:47am | Trying to develop this Acronym: Sathar Posting Assinine Material M-? E-? R-? Ideas? Note a good acronym will have uses in other areas outside SF where sathar is easily subsituted for something beginning with S like S___head and so on. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 August 5, 2014 - 4:56am | Side note my Dad just told me a new story about his time in Thailand during the Vietnam war where one officer decided that the maintenance personnel would wear a baseball hat that had their nickname on the side and the word "PRIDE" on the front. hats were in different color to identify what shop the tech was from. PRIDE stood for Persistent Results In Dedicated Effort Problem developed when one tech had a nick name of "Pussy" and was told that was sexist and he had to change it. so this tech got a new hat with PRIDE on the front and SHAME on the side. He asserted in a very straight faced manner that SHAME was his other nickname but when questioned on it he said it "was that with which he fought PRIDE, Sustained Half Assed Maintenance Effort. Abub August 5, 2014 - 9:37am | Why would you want a nickname of Pussy? ----------------------------------------------- |
jedion357 August 5, 2014 - 12:52pm | Dunno, this was 50 years ago in 68 hard to say why this guy had this nick name other than maybe the drill instructor gave it to him during basic and it stuck. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Shadow Shack August 5, 2014 - 4:40pm | Nicknames are typically earned and given on the spot. Even though I've never used it as an introduction, all my biker buds refer to me as "Honda Richard"...one of them coined that over fifteen years ago and it just stuck. |
KRingway August 9, 2014 - 2:23am | One of my old RPG group went by the nickname of 'Leper', a moniker bestowed upon him because of a short-lived bought of acne. The nickname stuck long after the acne had gone, and he never minded it... too much. In fact, all of us had nicknames or some particular sort of joke made constantly at our expense. One of my old friends is an established RPG author and still uses his nickname to this day in an official capacity via updates about his company's games, Kickstarters etc. |
jedion357 August 9, 2014 - 9:54am | One of the techs that worked with Dad in Thailand was into wt lifting and working out so with a buff body and the Air force issue shaved head he got the nme super budha. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
iggy August 9, 2014 - 2:24pm | Iggy comes from Igor. I had just moved back to Vegas for 10th grade. In PE I threw a baseball rather poorly so the guys called me Igor. Turned out these same boys were in my geometry class and continued to call me Igor the rest of the year. I totally loved geometry and could do any proof or construction. The other guys got to dodging questions by telling the teacher to ask Igor. Eventually the teacher began calling me Igor. The next year some of these guy ended up in AP chemistry with me and somehow the name had changed to iggy. I was one of their smart class crowd and they wanted to work with me. This was reinforced by all the other classes we were in together such as AP physics an AP history. My yearbooks have a lot of iggy comments because it spread beyond them to their friends who were friends of my friends. Most people didn't know how iggy became my name and just took it for granted. -iggy |
jedion357 August 9, 2014 - 5:40pm | Freshman yeart I took some green gym shorts to school and cut off the sleeves of a green sweat shirt to be "cool" the minute that all the cool kids at school started calling me "green grub" in gym class I lost the green attire and found something new to wear. THe PE teacher must have been precient and he started calling me Tom Cat in class and that stuck thru my junior year. Sr year was spent in England at a public school run by the Department of Defense. The group of friends I fell in with were all from the south so I became the "Yank" being from Maine. I eventually discovered that my middle name was because of my uncle Gideon but I began to use Jedion as an on line persona because his nick name was Uncle Jed. that became solidified when a college freind spotted my email adress in a CC line and new it must be me because my middle name was Gedion and she had remembered that as being unusual to her. Thus on line I am Jedion with no connection to Star Wars (no I am not Jdei On) and off line I am simply Tom who is a geek and sci fi afficiando. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
