jedion357 December 22, 2013 - 5:00pm | Has there ever been a Heads Up Display goggles detailed for the game? Some of the battle helmets, I'm sure but what about goggles with or without a link to a body comp. What yazirian explorer wouldn't love to have a heads up display in his sun goggles showing things like time and compass direction, perhaps even a blue tooth connection to the toxyrad gauge? Or what star law officer wouldn't love one with a facial recognition feature? I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
dmoffett December 22, 2013 - 6:42pm | It's possable with todays technology so it should be more than possable with the frontier tech as well. But I would say... you have to buy them that way. The Game master should come up with a price for each element added and they would have to be connected to the devices either by a cable or a wireless connection. You better hope the bad guys dont Jam your blue tooth unless you have wires going through your clothes to the goggles from your toxy gauge, your cronochom, your weapon sights, your news feed your iphone and all the other concievable gadgets. Lets say that the wireless HUD goggles can connect to as many devices as the user can carry up to say 10 or 15 devices. But if your bad guys jam the freq your goggles become useless. Lets say ones ones with wires cant be jammed like that but you can only attach 5 to 10 devices to it and the wires cost more because you have to have all the connections built in when you have your goggles manufactured. In other words they are custom built to the specifications of the customer. The GM can even make them propietary so that If the goggles are made by a PGC owned comany that the chronocam made by Streel corp wont plug in and the software also wont match up either. You could roleplay this out a the Character meets a salesrep at the supplier, tells him what he wants and then the supplier tells him 5000 credits for goggles that do this that and the other thing, and by the way he has to replace all his previous equipment because its not compatable with the new HUD Goggles. If they want it make them blow the cash. The bombing starts in five minutes. |
iggy December 22, 2013 - 9:52pm | There is no electronic reason the wired connection could not be as many as the wireless. Actually the available bandwidth is better utilized in a wired arcitecture because noise is better controlled in a wire. -iggy |
jedion357 December 22, 2013 - 9:55pm | Well... what exactly would you desire to connect to a HUD goggle? chronocom, compass, toxy rad gauge, and body comp? anything else? that would be less than 5 devices. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
KRingway December 23, 2013 - 3:18am | I'd say a range-finder and some sort of low-light functionality, for starters. My SF gang developed the idea for something called a battlesuit, many moons ago. A battlesuit is pretty much a suit of armour that provides protection against various forms of attack. It's helmet had various functions similar to the sort of thing you're proposing. I'll have to see if any of the gang still have the details for it - I'm sure someone does! |
jedion357 December 23, 2013 - 4:50am | There's been helmets detailed in the SFman I just though that goggles would be more appropriate for running around Port Loren- less combat oriented. Certainly the magni-goggles would get these features too. Since goggles are such a big part of the yazirian kit I thinking a company on Hargut is making these The Explorer has a chrono, compass, toxyrad gauge display. The Arialist has a chrono, compass, and altimeter display +5% bonus to ability or skill checks performed by anyone doing an arial manuever either gliding or parachuting The Net Runner is a trendy model that technicians favor. Not sure yet what its capabilities are but it will be something like it must be mated with a a personal computer (see Dark Side of the Moon module) running a computer security program or a hacker program I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
KRingway December 23, 2013 - 8:49am | HUD goggles might perhaps be a tad chunky on their own? IIRC, the US Dept of Defense was looking into contact lenses that can have information beamed onto them in a HUD-like manner. Maybe that's an option that might make for something more lightweight. Depends on what has to be worn to beam the HUD display onto the lenses. Then again, maybe 'reactalite' contacts for Yazirians might make more sense than goggles... |
