jedion357 December 20, 2013 - 2:57pm | First off he reveals that the art department got next to no notice on the Star Frontiers game and that he as well as Easley and the other artists would have loved to have been included in the design of the aliens, what came out they never liked. He felt that if Easley had been given a shot at doing the concept art for the aliens that they would have really had something. Of all the new aliens Larry liked the "monkey dude" the most. They were not given any time at all to do the SF art as it was rush rush to get it to market after the revamp of the rules from what Cook and Schick had done. The Basic Game book cover was a color rough (acrlyic wash and ink on illustration board) where as the advance game rule book was a finished painting (oil on illustration board) Larry wrote that he had both Star Wars and Alein on his mind but that he did not actually paint the picture that was in his head and that he was disappointed with the AD cover of the ship crash with the two humans and yazirian, which is simply titled STar Frontiers in the art book He says he enjoyed the following paintings since he had more time to paint them: He also painted the KHs cover which was titled Fighter Attack (acrylic and oils on illustration board) The Villians of Volturnus book cover was titled "Star Frontiers Endless Quest book cover" (acrylic and oils on illustration board) He enjoyed ship design and the big ship in the following was his favorite. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 December 20, 2013 - 2:59pm | I love the perspective of the fighter craft coming directly at the observer of the artwork. The big ship is not my favorite but the rest of the craft in this pic are wonderful and its truly a shame this never made a cover of a product. I like far better than the original KHs cover. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
TerlObar December 20, 2013 - 3:39pm | Which explains why none of his pictures have Vrusk or Dralasites in them. Of all the new aliens Larry liked the "monkey dude" the most. Ad Astra Per Ardua! Shadow Shack December 20, 2013 - 3:44pm | Despite a lacking involvement I still think the aliens turned out well. |
bossmoss December 20, 2013 - 6:19pm | Love it. What's the title of this Elmore book again? |
Abub December 20, 2013 - 7:06pm | Nice art but every one of those ships I think assumes Artifical gravity generation ala Star Trek/Wars ----------------------------------------------- |
jedion357 December 20, 2013 - 8:41pm | The big ship is reminiscent of ships from 70's sci fi novel covers. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

Nice art but every one of those ships I think assumes Artifical gravity generation ala Star Trek/Wars As do the ships from AD (Serena Dawn, Omicron, & crashed Hepplewhite Inc ship) and the Sathar Scout Ship. The AD ships are forgivable because there were no set rules for them, but the inexcusable Sathar Scout Ship came out after KH was published. |
AZ_GAMER December 21, 2013 - 4:03pm | That's awesome. Thanks for finding this gem and posting it. While I love the pure-ist hard sci-fi that the game tries to capture everyone here knows that I am a big supporter of the inclusion of simulated or artificial gravity. It may not be reality but heck neither is FTL so I think that optional rules eventually need to be created that let us bring these other technologies into play. Sorry not trying to hijack the forum but it is interesting that most of the artists envisioned star frontiers in a horizontal to thrust axis game universe. |

I'm not hip deep into my game yet... but for me... I think the linear acceleration based artifical gravity will create unique game play oppertunities because it creates MORE zero-G situations than most Sci-Fi. I think it will help my upcoming game not be a clone of Star War/Star Trek. This is all my opinion... and I've not gotten past some planning phase for running my game in the new year. I had waffled between SF and running my "Big Ship Adventure" game using Margrette Wies Marvel's cortex system which if I had done that I was going to make more a Star Trek style game with Artifical Gravity. I might still do that some day. ----------------------------------------------- |
