K Peterson December 13, 2013 - 6:02pm | Hi SFers, I'm an old gamer that started playing SF back in the early 80s. I haven't played much SF since then, though I've "recycled" the modules to use with a number of other game systems. I'm going to be prepping soon to run an SF campaign in January for some younger guys, that were never exposed to it. It'll be some light, fun, beer-n-pretzels gaming, as a break from some of our more "serious" gaming. The campaign premise that I have in mind is that the PCs will be employees of the Cassadine Development Corporation, and work to further their interests in ongoing corporate warfare with other Megacorps. They will begin as "associates" working their way up the ladder by performing some dirty work, and "cleaning" up messy situations. I'm going to be using a couple SF modules, with some tweaks, as a framework for the campaign. I'll likely kick things off running a toned-down Bugs in the System, will include some of my own adventures in the middle, and then likely finish the campaign with Mission to Alcazzar. |
TerlObar December 13, 2013 - 6:18pm | Sounds fun. We'd love to hear game reports on how things go. Feel free to ask questions and post ideas. I'm sure you'll get lots of feedback. And you might want to mine the Star Frontiersman and Frontier Explorer magazines for adventures. If there is anything there that fits it will save you some prep. Ad Astra Per Ardua! K Peterson December 13, 2013 - 6:33pm | Hey, thanks! I have some rough adventure ideas that I'll post here over the weekend - after I've put some serious thought into them. Escorting a CDC trade delegation as they meet with an alien race - and the fallout when it goes sideways. Performing some espionage work - infiltrating a secured facility, grabbing some important documents, and fleeing the scene (in a high speed skimmer chase). Just some random ideas. I've got all the Star Frontiersman and Frontier Explorer mags downloaded but I haven't read them in great detail. Are there any adventures in them you'd recommend that would be easy to convert to this premise? |
jedion357 December 13, 2013 - 8:15pm | I'd recommend starting with the FE as you could read all of them faster than all of the SFman :) One of the most impactful documents for RPG that I ever read was the Rolemaster Campaign Law. fully one half was rule free advice on putting a campaign together and the last half which dealt with actual Rolemaster rules had stuff that was usable in any system. It got me thinking about the stakes of a campaign and build up to a conclussion. For example in Crash on Volturnus the PCs know that what is at stake is their fate to live or die the game master would know that the actually scope is greater. In Volturnus Planet of Mystery the players begin to realize that what is at stake is the fate of three primitive species as well as them selves. By the time of the 3rd module the stakes have raised to be the fate of a world. Campaign Law spent a lot of time taking about the visible and hidden scope of an adventure as well as the stakes. My best recommendation beside finding a copy of that book and reading it is to think about the stakes of the sections of your campaign and the build up to a conclusion. Once you've revealed scope you can't really pull back Things need to keep building toward the conclusion. Good Luck I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
K Peterson December 19, 2013 - 9:33am | The approaching holidays have delayed my campaign planning. But, I did get some time to pore through the issues of FE and SFMan. I thought that "Crom's Return" from SFMan #2 (http://starfrontiers.info/wiki/index.php/Crom%E2%80%99s_Return) might make a good addition. Fun and scary. I plan to write up two adventure ideas during the holiday break to place between the 2 SF modules I listed above. A diplomatic mission and a wild game hunt, per se: "Trade Negotiations" - (a placeholder title) - will involve the characters accompanying a CDC trade delegation as they seek to secure mining rights from the native sophonts on a frontier world. They'll have to deal with:
Any input/criticisms would be welcome. Thanks! |
jedion357 December 19, 2013 - 10:51am | Trade Negotiations is the script to a TOS star trek episode I just watched. Kirk, spock, mccoy and redshirt beam down to negotiate for dilithium crystals from primitives but klingon negotiator is already there. McCoy has to slap the leader's wife in the face to save her and she becomes attached to him and names her baby for him- it the episode where McCoy says, "I'm a doctor not an escalator."Filmed on location at Las Vegas rocks. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
K Peterson December 19, 2013 - 11:15am | I remember that episode! Fun stuff. |
Abub December 19, 2013 - 1:41pm | I don't know I could plan that far ahead with my group of players. ----------------------------------------------- |
K Peterson December 19, 2013 - 2:38pm | I don't think any plan will survive contact with players. :) |
jedion357 December 19, 2013 - 5:53pm | I don't think any plan will survive contact with players. :) True, that. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Karxan January 17, 2014 - 6:13pm | @K, For your "Uglaut hunt" you could use the planet Torrent from Issue #8 of the SFman, pg 11. It is a very dangeroud place and would be ideal for a big game hunt. And welcome to the site too. |
