jedion357 December 2, 2013 - 1:06pm | Species Average Body Temperature dralasite 30C human 37C vrusk 38C yazirian 39C humma 38C ifshnit 32C osakar 42C ? just for comparison that average temp for an osakar is 107.6F They (osakar) resemble a huge, white plant more than any animal. Really? That plant has some metabolism to run that temperature. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
bossmoss December 2, 2013 - 8:09pm | I think they are just meant to look like a plant, not actually be a plant. Besides, I don't think ol' Kim Eastland really thought it out that much. |
rattraveller December 2, 2013 - 9:37pm | Maybe the Osakar have hot running sap like maple trees. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
iggy December 2, 2013 - 11:29pm | I interpret the parthenogenesis nature of Osakar and their plate-like cells on their skin that make them resemble a plant to be they are neither strictly plant nor mammal but an alien hybrid of the two. This makes them very alien like the dralasite. They reproduce asexually with the mother laying a seed-egg which develops into a copy of the mother. If they were strictly plant the reproduction would be apomixis. As to why their temperature is so high, I think that might be an active defense for their world. From wikipedia on warm blooded, "It has been hypothesized that mammals and birds evolved warm-bloodedness as a defence against fungal infections. Very few fungi can survive the body temperatures of warm-blooded animals. By comparison, insects, reptiles, and amphibians are plagued by fungal infections." Given that the Osakar homeworld is full of mammal, plant, and fungal life or rather fungal, hybrid funglant, and hybrid mammal-plant life forms, the osakar could have a high body temperature to defend against funglant infections. -iggy |
jedion357 December 3, 2013 - 4:28am | @bossmoss- agreed Eastland was going in a less science and more science fantasy/gammaworld direction. Interesting point on the fungal infection angle. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
Jaxon December 6, 2013 - 6:01am | Nice one on the fungus Iggy. Good one on the temps, Jed. |
