jedion357 October 27, 2013 - 6:37am | Discussion on Maze started in the Wonders of the Frontier thread from general forums http://www.starfrontiers.us/node/7760 but things progressed along and threatened to hi-jack that thread so I'm starting this one to 1 preserve the indepth information that was evolving on the city in an easily located spot and give it a place for more development. Iggy has a good description of how the city of Maze grew and developed and we need to clean that up and move it here, perhaps in the documents of this project. The short of it is that Maze grew out without any real central planning, new communities sprung up and we're proposing that individuals post their ideas for these communities, barrio's, ghettos, sub-divisions etc. to be compiled in a larger city brief for Maze planned for publication in the FE. Ariadne or Naxos work for early community names at the heart of old section, I think Iggy should describe these as he came up with the names I've proposed New Sauria but since the saurian material is optional my offering is also "optional" I think I'll develop an old name for New Sauria for the industrial park before it became an ethnic bario for the lizard folk. that way anyone choosing to ignore the saurians in their game can simply use the other name (I dont think this little project will be complete without a map which can bear both names with one of them in smaller print). New Sauria is a "China Town" for the saurian refugees, originally it was one of those AI experiments that went wrong and it was primarily an industrial park. The saurian extended family/clan groups moved into old industrial space, sectioned them off for each extended clan group and overnight it became a ethnic barrio and the criminal/scavenger elements that were hiding/existing there were driven out. The saurian's initial experience dealing with the low life elements in this area has predisposed them toward a self righteous attitude that sort of came through in the original Dragon magazine article- they are very much about law and order and support both Star Law and Space Fleet with their attitudes and actions. The external structure of New Sauria is "post industrial networking" while the internal structure of the buildings is Kichsen Revival. Making New Sauria a fusion of badly programed AI directed industrial networks and classic (one could say nostolgic) saurian building patterns. At its heart is a temple initially dedicated to the saurian religion from Kischen but it has now taken on extreme nationalistic overtones due to the saurian desire to kill the sathar and retake their planet. I smell an Exploration article of the city of Maze in the offing here...Since the city grew up in hap hazzard fashion if a half dozen of us create communities within Maze the fact that we all dont have the same vision will play to that. Iggy or myself as editors with the magazine can compile the offerings into an article and even round up some art. I'm even envisioning a mega city symbol- a circle with a maze depicted on it and bulls head on top of that. the "city fathers" (that's an oxymoron) have added the phrase "Maze, The First Maxi-city" or mega-city if you like but I think in AD or Zebs it uses the word Maxi-city. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
iggy October 27, 2013 - 10:16pm | Somehow I had posted in this project a year ago but never became a member. I was missing something. I like this project. anyway.... There is a need to make a planet map of Minotaur. Then we pick the location of the first city, Ariadne or Naxos. Then we make top level black box maps of the various cities and town and sub-divisions that make up Maze. I think the geography should also encourage the disjointed city planning and lack of grid and other non-maze layouts. Is there an existing planet map of Minotaur? -iggy |
Jaxon October 28, 2013 - 1:04am | Not that I know of. Each section submitted should have a number too - x, y, z. |
jedion357 October 28, 2013 - 5:59am | No but I can break out the campaign cartographer software and it does some nice enough maps of a planet - one format is for the classic Traveller hex map of a planet and one of the paint brushes is a city brush that can be used to cover most of a contnent in city. The hexes are, I believe they are numbered and people can simply claim a hex for their location. Need to decide on some environmental parameters for the planet like ammount of oceans etc. Mountain ranges? It might be cool to have a mountain range feature swallowed up with in the city and for there to be a "Wrong side of the mountains" to be from. I'm also thinking that peninsula 's could feature into the geography and require some indirect transportation to move to and from them. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
iggy October 28, 2013 - 1:19pm | There is a world map of Minotaur in sfman 11 by Shadow Shack. I'll fire an email to him asking if he has a high res version. -iggy |

Does it reflect the thinking on Maze being a maxi city? There is a world map of Minotaur in sfman 11 by Shadow Shack. I'll fire an email to him asking if he has a high res version. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
iggy October 28, 2013 - 4:50pm | The article does. The map is pretty low res. Hard to tell. -iggy |
thespiritcoyote November 10, 2013 - 5:59am | would it be ok to ask for a polar projection hex map, like the blanks I left in the library? Oh humans!! We discover a galactic community filled with multiple species of aliens, and the first thing we think about is "how can we have sex with them?". ~ anymoose, somewhere on the net... so... if you square a square it becomes a cube... if you square a cube does it become an octoid? |
