Malcadon October 18, 2013 - 5:30pm | Louis "Lou" Scheimer died the other day on the 17th of October. For those who don't know, Lou Scheimer and Norm Prescott (who died back in '05) formed Filmation back in the '60s and lasted until the late '80s. Most would remember them for cartoons like Masters of the Universe, Bravestar, and Ghost Busters (the other one; the one with a gorilla), but in the '70s they produced a number of live action sci-fi shows that had a major impression on the designs and esthetics seen in the art of Star Frontiers. Shows like Ark II, Space Academy, and Jason of Star Command. Yeah, they are silly and campy as all hell, but they are still enjoyable. Oh, and I also highly recommended watching Flash Gordon: The Greatest Adventure of All (an animated TV movie, and pilot for the cartoon series). Unlike most of their family-friendly shows, this one is a little more adult, with deaths and sexual-suggestive content. |
jedion357 October 18, 2013 - 6:14pm | I was aware of Masters of the Universe and (She-Ra), BraveStar and Ghost Busters but they had little appeal for me at the time they were on TV. It was way to obvious in how they were formulaic and I just didn't watch them. Jason of Star Command, Space Academy, and Ark II were adictive for me when they aired- loved seeing James Doohan in a sci fi series at least for the first season of Space Academy until he bailed to be in Star Trek the Motions Picture. Watching them now, they are corny but I still like them. Planaron Station in the Warriors of White Light module was clearly base on the Space Academy/ Star Command facility. Thank you Lou and Norm for the good times. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
FirstCitizen October 18, 2013 - 7:36pm | I think I will get up at 6:30am tomorrow (like I used to do for Saturday morning cartoons) and watch Ark II dvd episodes while eating junk food. |
