CmdrMic September 7, 2013 - 2:30pm | Hi Guys, I'm new to this board and to Star Frontiers & tabletop RPG in General. Lately I am studying Star Frontiers as well as volumous Spelljammer with AD&D2ndED. I find them both pretty darn interesting; though attempting to learn SF & SJ both at the same time is messing with my head a bit... But there are so many cool ideas in both! Its a tough call... While I really like Star Frontiers for it's relative realism, Spelljammer is also very cool - if you don't think about it too deeply and go along (magic indeed solves so many hard scifi issues). I first learned about Spelljammer via the 1992 SSI PC Game- Spelljammer: The Pirates of Realmspace. I'm just getting back into that PC game too. Speaking of PC games, Star Frontiers kind of reminds me of another PC game called: Hard Nova, an excellent old RPG computer game by Electronic Arts (also from the early 1990s). Well, I just wanted to introduce myself and say "hello". Kind Regards, ~ Mic |
FirstCitizen September 7, 2013 - 7:12pm | Welcome on board! Hard Nova...I found my copy when cleaning out a closet the other day. That was a gritty frontier like game! Sadly the box contains 5-1/4" floppies. |
jedion357 September 8, 2013 - 4:22am | Welcome on board. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |

Hi FirstCitizen, Yep, 5.25" disks can be a prob. unless you have a vintage system running (which of course I do). BTW, vintage 486 systems now are cresting $400 on eBay! Haha, they used to go for 30 bucks. Anyways, You can get a copy of Hard Nova, and many many other great old game absolutely free (with no registering and no catch), currently at: [url=http://www.myabandonware.com]www.myabandonware.com[/url] ... Hmm, BB Code does not work here??? Am I doing something wrong? Okay... You can download Hard Nova via the link at the bottom of the page here: http://www.myabandonware.com/game/hard-nova-ws (What type of board is this? I cannot find any help on inserting links, etc. Don't see an icon for inserting links... hmm) Help Docs? |
TerlObar September 8, 2013 - 12:33pm | @CmdrMic, the site uses the TinyMCE editor not BBCode like you might be used to on other forums. In the first row of the text editor controls there is a chain link icon. It's typically grayed out but if you highlight text it becomes active. Clicking on that lets you enter a link. That said, if you're just providing a URL that's all you need to do. The forums automatically convert URLs into links. You only need to use the link tool if you want to have text that links somewhere like this link to the Frontier Explorer magazine Ad Astra Per Ardua! TerlObar September 8, 2013 - 12:51pm | And I realized I didn't answer your question about the type of board. The site is based on an older version of Drupal with a lot of customizations by CleanCutRogue who created the board back in 2007 (wow has it really been that long). w00t is currently the site admin (although he's been off-line for a while recently) and I host the site on my server (and am an admin as well). So I guess that means if you have any technical questions about the site, you can direct them to me. Ad Astra Per Ardua! I have it running on an old XP system I keep around for sound forge, cool old game, has a Cyberpunk edge to it that would fit well with any number of Frontier adventures. I do actually still have my first PC, an old 286 with an Amber monochrome monitor, Windows 1.1, but no networking. |

Hi Again FirstCitizen, Hey, I am glad you snagged it; cool you got it going... Being an old flight simulator guy, I found a very early Microprose Title there called Solo Flight. A mid-1980s Sid Meiers project - Amazingly, it has decent gameplay value and the flight simming aspect is pretty good too. I found this really nice little TSR program that lets you pic any set of EGA colours to replace the otherwise annoying CGA palettes. Sure makes those old games look better to play. The older I get the more I realise the best games are in our heads anyways. Yes, I believe you to be spot on regarding Hard Nova, it does have an excellent cyber-punk thing going for it... Actually, I think Nova is sporting a late 1980s Pat Benatar-ish cyber punk hair-do... Ha ha. Did you snag the manual? It is a must. Games like Hard Nova, can be inspiring to help get into the Star Frontiers mindset, or visa versa. Seems like if you are really into Knight Hawks - you would love "Rules of Engagements II" (circa 1991 by Impressions) - in which you can make your own games / campaigns, etc. Check it out! http://www.myabandonware.com/game/rules-of-engagement-2-2zq OMG, 286... aye. Ha ha, that would be just about right for Solo Flight! Monocrome monitor supported!!! ;-) Here you go - http://www.myabandonware.com/game/solo-flight-2w I am really feeling the "tug" of Spelljammer, inspired by the Spelljammer: Pirates of Realmspace PC game. The reviewer really pans the heck out of it on that site, but personally I think its done rather well - faithfully to what they could realistically do to the tabletop game, considering again, it was an early 1990s effort. just scored this "Spelljammer - The Complete Spacefarer's Handbook. OMG, very cool. Weird, but cool... The book helps the PC game, and as above, the reverse... http://www.myabandonware.com/game/spelljammer-pirates-of-realmspace-1in Regards. C.M. |

bossmoss October 15, 2013 - 9:48pm | Nice to see someone interested in Spelljammer! I used to play that quite heavily, back with my old D&D group. We still get together and play it sometimes. Welcome, hope to hear all about your games. |
