Larger Sector Map With More Empty Stars

I had the idea of making an alternative Star Frontier map with all of the star systems we all know and love (and then some), but with all those systems spread-out over greater distances, separated by uninhabited star systems - with ether lifeless rocks and gas giants, or with nothing at all. On top of that, each star would have different elevations. These uninhabited star systems may have an outpost with the spacer's equivalent to a truck-stop, and a military base (of an adjacent system) to prevent threats before they reach their homeworld.

The idea with this, is to make the Frontier look and feel larger, with more unexplored areas, while making the worlds feel isolated, and to have the map look more realistic. I like how this map uses Prenglar - thee hub of the setting - as the focal-point for spatial coordinates. Although, I would have it as ±000-±000-±00 with XYZ vectors, and I would use terms like Rimwards, Corewards, Spinwords, etc.

I have not done anything to manifest such a map, so I have nothing - making star maps is not my strength. If anyone wish to tackle this, then by all means, go ahead. I'm just throwing-out a random thought that might be useful to someone.

I did a Celestia model of the frontier based off of a map on the internet with Prenglar as the 0,0,0 point.  It is pretty cool to rotate the frontieer and see how it looks from other angles.  I also made the rim go up away from the frontier so that Klaeok and Crixia are farther away from Fromeltar and Kisk'-kar when viewed from the sides.  I should make a video of it all and post it to youtube and a zip file with all of the Celestia add-ons and a readme about installing them.

This is one idea and certainly with potential but what if we left the Frontier map as is and expanded space around it with new maps?
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

I ported the SF map into a 3D format compatible with my online game.  Iggy provided the original source data if I remember correctly. :)

I really need to get the app live now that I deployed my servers to hosting.  The idea I had was building out a 50x50x50 or 100x100x100 light year section with Prenglar at 0x0x0.  The idea was a select few "admins" could fill out web forms to create system details.

I've given serious consideration to redoing the frontier in a Traveller style hex map...

That's what I did. I pretty much used the Frontier/Rim as a 'subsector' although the distances involved aren't a true subsector but hey - I started drawing it up in MapTool before I started reading the Traveller books. Any way I added areas of space all around the Frontier.

I did the Frontier on Traveller Subsector maps. Not to hard. I used the travel times listed on the SF book map which is in days and the Traveller time of 1 week to cross a hex and then rounded up or down to get rough spacing. Then I giggled it to get it the way I wanted it. I put the new planets from the Guide we don't talk about in a different subsector bordering and the Sathar and their allies in another and some planets to explore in another.

I find it easier to use and locate but not as pretty to look at.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

Anybody here ever played: Frontier Elite II?  That game has a cool rotating 3D starmap.

If  you are not familiar:

I never realised until recently that FE2 / Elite was nearly entirely ripped off from Traveller...

I haven't played Frontier Elite II, but I like the sound of a rotating 3D starmap!

In my long-term campaign, I took the well-known 2D Frontier map and made it 3D.  I didn't have access to computers back then, so I established a central plane, and then color-coded each star to indicate how far it was above or below that plane.

I also extended the star map well beyond the Frontier in each direction (including above & below) to give the players somewhere to explore.

P.S.
Once - love that map!

Sounds good to me,

http://www.starfrontiers.us/node/5338

...anything that helps provide a 3d scale, and shows the true size and density of interstellar bodies within that 120ly sphere the frontier worlds can feasibly hold onto by some nominal imperial control, sounds good to me.
Oh humans!! Innocent We discover a galactic community filled with multiple species of aliens, and the first thing we think about is "how can we have sex with them?".
