jedion357 June 1, 2013 - 5:17am | http://www.examiner.com/list/four-ways-jack-vance-influenced-dungeons-dragons/vancian-magic I did not know that Vecna was an anagram of Vance. I have to admit though that I had not read much of Jack Vance's writing other than I believe a short story. Interesting to see how this man touched us all even if you had not read his works. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
jedion357 June 1, 2013 - 5:28am | I posted this on my LinkedIn group discussing this event: Being north of 39 myself I always find myself a little ill at ease when word comes of the passing of a torch bearer in fantasy/Sci Fi literature or RPGs (Bradbury, Gygax and etc). Its like a cold glass of water in the face that startles me into a realization that my childhood is past (not that my own children dont constantly make me feel old). I suppose the ill at ease feeling is due in part to the realization that death comes for us all sooner or later and there is sadness at the thought of the passing of a torch bearer leaving us. There are a host of good memories that come back to me as well so its always bitter sweet emotions at a time such as this. Thank you Jack for bearing a torch and lighting a path we now stand on the shoulders of giants like yourself. I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers! |
rattraveller June 1, 2013 - 4:54pm | Jed we have reached the age where the people we looked up to as kids and young adults are moving on. It is now our turn to be the ones the younger generations look too. Take Gygax, Bradbury, Doohan, Vance and the many others and use their example to guide you. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |

gcc June 24, 2013 - 3:24pm | Wow, interesting article. I had no idea of the links between Vance and D&D (although I'm sadly not overly familiar with his work). I think I need to make a trip to my local used book store this weekend and catch up on some reading! Jason |
