In the industrial age one of the requirements for a nation to
be a major power is to be capable of producing your own weapons. Those nations with that capability consider
it a matter of national security to retain it as it affords them a level of
security and helps ensure their independence.
Generally a nation will give preferential treatment to its own companies
and factories to ensure that the knowledge base and capability to produce
assorted weaponry remains safely within its home territory. There are countless real world examples both
present day and historically so there is no need to get into specific examples
and potentially get sidetracked. The
point is, nations deem the ability to produce weapons to be one of their
highest priorities. How do you think this relates to the Frontier? Should every planetary government have its
own proprietary weapon producing capability? Should each race? Do you think Dralasite
planets would be content to rely on weapons supplied by a Yazarian company? As
Human, how would you feel about depending on the Vrusk for your defense? |
rattraveller January 26, 2013 - 5:53am | the frontier presents a problem since the megacorp with the highest income is wartech the weapons manufacturer. how they interact with planetary governments isan interesting question do they have central factories or do they have factories on every good sized planet and have planetary governments all up in their bizzynes Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
Ascent January 26, 2013 - 7:02am | Always remember, arms dealers and weapons manufacturers thrive on war. They have their hands in every political pot and stir up contention wherever they can and are the biggest backers to the gun lobbies. TerlObar January 26, 2013 - 10:17am | I like my Frontier to be spacecraft lite. While there is travel between the systems it is not really ubitquitous with thousands of ships. Thus there is not enough space commerce to really make transport of goods from one planet to another cheap. Thus in my view every planet of the Frontier is self sufficient with the possible exception of the planets classified as outpost. In fact, that is the difference between outpost and light population. Once the planet is capable of sustaining its own in the event of being cut off from the rest of the Frontier, it is considered light population. Before that it is an outpost. I see the space trade as being mostly in luxury goods and the rare or hard to produce items. Most of the Megacorps have facilities on most of the planets they do business with since it is much cheaper to build a factory and produce the goods locally than build a big factory in one location and then all the ships and pay the cost fo transport throughout the Frontier. vmnjn January 26, 2013 - 3:02pm | I consider interstellar shipping to be more the domain of rare-ish raw materials, luxury goods, and specialty items. Except for outposts and disasters, like a blight, I've always figured the worlds of the Frontier were self sufficient. So for most things, including weaponry, each world builds their own. However, I don't see each world as being isolated either. Like with the growing 3d printing craze, I see the most valuable item in the Frontier as product designs. The "megacorps" either license their designs to local producers or they own a local production facility. So Wartech weapons would be available on most planets not because Wartech ships its weapons to every planet. They are just produced on most planets. Of course you still have specialty items that are too difficult to produce locally which must be shipped in. |
