I took a fresh look at the basic game book this morning and noticed a few things.

1. the intro on the inside of the the front cover isn't all that bad for a intro for new players and why not we all read it and it hooked us?

2. Page 1 says "Exciting Adventures on Alien Worlds" which is a connection to the original incarnation of the game as "Alien Worlds" since Volturnus is so well developed with flora and fauna I have to wonder if some of the creatures listed in the AD book were not developed by Schick and Cook themselves and simply got used for the Volturnus campaign.

3. page 16 upper right hand column:
Basic Game wrote:
A special meeting of delegates from the United Planetary Federation Council on Frontier Law and Peace is being conducted on a nearby planet. Someone or something is murdering the delegates one by one. The players must find the murderers and prevent further assassinations.

Ok, so just what is the UPF Council on Frontier Law and Peace? the fact that the word peace is included suggests a very un-human like train of thought most like from dralasite or vrusk thinking it would seem to me.

An abandoned alien city ship has entered the planetary system on a collision course wth a colonized planet. The characters must find the giant ship's control center and change its course before it hits the planet.

my first reaction to that was "dungeon crawl in space" kind of a cool idea, certainly great potential for mutliple adventures- the one suggested but then what if things begin to wake up and take issue with the PCs? then corporate interests show up and fight over the city-ship that would give you a KHs scenario to play out- the PCs are not on those ships but they randomly draw for sides and the actual winner is the side that nominally gains control of the city ship. Then for a final climatic event it turns out the ship poses a threat on a grand scale and it must either be destroyed or sent to jump randomly into void space. Perhaps this is the source of the technology to make the hull scrapers- players first encounter them here but latter the corporation that captured samples of them reverse engineers them. Then it turns out that its a hull scraper that is actually killing the delegates above at the conference which is actually held at a STar Play resort. Players begin to realise that they've seen this creature before. Its played off as a accident but the truth is that someone figured out how to control these creatures and they really did assassinate delegates.

I also love the comment on page 16 " this ends the basic game"

Also looking at the basic game I'm reminded from page 16 that Star Frontiers was my first exposure to the metric system that actually made sense. What does that say about our school system that a role playing game can succeed better at teaching math and science?

I actually wrote the adventure from your #3.  I have it sitting on the shelf behind me.  I had forgotten that was where the inspiration came from for the idea.  But it wasn't hull scrapers killing the delegates Smile.

Murder mystery can go lots of ways. Sounds like we have a back up serial adventure for the FE though.

I am thinking we need to do a forum on space currents. The Yazirians, Saurians and to a lesser extent the other Core Four just end up in the Frontier. Now an alien city ship. Something must be drawing them to this current of space.

Oh and love the alien city ship thing. Thinking it is the perfect mission for the Clarion Royal Marines. Somebody needs to see what they are trying to smuggle on to Gollywog.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?
