rattraveller November 25, 2012 - 10:51am | Just like in the movies almost all PCs speak the same language with near perfect diction. Just to mix things up a bit we all know our lovable Dralasites speak their own language and it uses shapes and scents. So I was wondering when a Dralasite learns to speak Pan-Galactic how much of his/her/its accent would they carry over to it. Or more simply put how much of pleasant or unpleasant odors do Dralasites release when talking to others races in Pan-Galactic or the other races' native language? In the same vein how do you think their odor communication effected their development in: telephone radio music television add your own Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |

Its sounds funny to have a "Smell-O-Scope" aimed to outer-space, but I saw a video by Vsauce that says that is not too off-base in reality. (By the way, that guy makes same great science-related videos.) If the Frontier dose have olfactory-based communication, should poly-voxes have smell emitters/receivers to help non-Dralasites communicate in that fashion? |
rattraveller November 25, 2012 - 3:29pm | Poly-voxes suffer from not being able to translate body motions and other visual cues. This is why in the description it mentions the possibility of mistranslation. I do wonder how it would cope with races that use total non-verbal communication like telepathy or visual light flashing from their eyes or those who use sign language. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
OnceFarOff November 25, 2012 - 6:44pm | Cool topic. I wonder if Drals not being able to smell what you're saying is like when we get in arguments because we misunterstood a text message... |
rattraveller November 25, 2012 - 8:01pm | Thinking about it try to imagine having a conversation with someone who only speaks a third of your language. Besides only getting every third word the body language is not what you think. Like when westerners give the OK sign in Egypt not knowing it is the Evil Eye sign there. Thinking a history of how the Dutch first made contact with the Japanese and had to open communicaton with each other could be helpful. Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go? |
bossmoss November 26, 2012 - 10:33am | It is very similar to when people use sarcasm in emails, texts, comments, etc. The sarcasm just does not come through. It is based entirely on tone of voice. Creates misunderstandings all the time! |
