I found this and thought I would share it. This would be awesome to see in action live.

http://englishrussia.com/2008/05/09/russian-worlds-largest-military-hovercraft/

There is a video at the bottom of the page. Does not show as much as I would like but it is still cool. The following text is from the site. I tried to upload the picture but had some difficulties.

This is the world’s largest military hovercraft and it belongs to the Russian army.
It is armed with missiles, artillery and AA defense guns and can carry a few heavy tanks at once.
After approaching to the enemy coastline it can give a burst of fire to tear of such fierce force that can tear big military ship apart, then without any slowing down start moving on the shore advancing deep inside to unload the tanks and infantry.
There is a video below too.

Why is it the Soviets built such awesome vehicles (also remembering a couple of earlier posts of this style)?

Who are the "Soviets" of the Frontier?

The Soviets evolved out of the destruction of a feudal monarchy where the disconnect between the classes was so great as to be measured in light years. It instituted a new system where all animals were equal but some animals were more equal than others which left a ruling class light years above the working class. to get a soviet social system in the frontier you would need a system of social inequity that would allow for a revolution to institute an Orwellian style Animal Farm. You certainly would not get it on Clarion as the monarchy there is not wired in the right way for that sort of situation to develop, IMO.

Normally I would say the nature and structure of yazirian clans would prevent this from happening on a yazirian planet but then there is the Fo1 which presents a bit of a dictatorial/totalitarian vibe. So I would vote Hentz as the soviets of the Frontier and cast to limited degrees the yazirian colonies as Eastern block countries.

Core 4 project development on the vrusk and their natural wiredness for commerce contra indicated them being even remotely disposed toward communism.

Dralasites on the other hand would have philosophers who delve into the philosophy of communism and go whole hog into it. But could dralasites institute a communist state? I dont think so. it would be in endless debate- the best would be that it could get instituted on a small local level but even then it would be questioned and debated and communism does not really tollerate being questioned.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

As a counter arguement I think you are forgetting Dralasite reproduction which would lend them a greater disposition toward Communism. Everyone is budded pretty equally BUT the great debaters would move on to the upper class while those not so good at debating would stay regulated to being just workers.

This then becomes a self sustaining system with those in the debating class giving their buds a greater oppurtunity to study and practice debating when young while workers buds would have to get to work and not have the chance to be as prepared for debates as debater class.
Sounds like a great job but where did you say we had to go?

@ rattraveller: I like that phrase: "debating class" I'll have to mull that one over for a while

that is not an endorsement of a dralasite communist collective in the Frontier even thought I find Rat T's thinking fairly sollid, I just wouldn't really want to go there since the dralasites are actually limited in planetary realestate.

OTOH- if this was the world government for Groth in the Fromeltar system that might be do-able for me and even interesting.
