Just spotted that the Hobbit is likely to be out for Christmas this year, directed by Peter Jackson with several returning cast from LotR. That for sure will make the holiday season merry for me, unless of course this prequel falls prey to the curse of prequels and sucks.

however i do look forward to it and need to wrap up reading The Hobbit with the girls.

though from some internet research it appears that Jackson is making the Hobbit a trillogy so one never knows whats up with that.
I might not be a dralasite, vrusk or yazirian but I do play one in Star Frontiers!

Strange, I seem to recall "The Hobbit" being just one book, much like Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers, and Return of the King which each were made into one movie per book.

With such an obvious ploy to make money, I think I'll wait for the DVD releases.

In defense of the upcoming movie, I too have heard that it is going to be at least a two parter (though i have not heard it was going to be a three parter) which make sense when you consider the absoultely epic scope of the story at hand. The animated version did a lot of narration that you can get away with in an animated film that would feel out of place in a live action film. The adventure up to mirkwood and rivendel with the goblins, the trolls, and the spiders could certainly fill one film alone and then the final plunge onto lonely mountain and the battle with smog could fill another and finally the epic battle of the races at the end could be stretched out into the lendth of its own film but that would be pushing it a little. If you recall from the animated feature most of the fighting from the last battle was seen from birds eye view with the action taking place like watching little ants running around furiously defending their hill. However if you changed the film live action with up close and personal vantage points you certainly could stretch those scenes out to fill out its own part of the movie. So, yes i can at least see this as two parter and possibly a trilogy if paced correctly.

The animated Hobbit was 77 minutes...and there is such a thing as 2½hour+ movies these days.

I could see it being 2 movies, but 3 is pushing it a bit.  The rumors I have read state that filler material from the Silmarillion and other Tolkien writings will be used to link all 6 together.

Actually he only has permission to use the Hobbit and the LotRs not the other stuff thus he turned to the appendix in LotRs for filler material and it sounds like the book The Hobbit supplies the material for the first two movies and that the third is to link the Hobbit to the LotR priniciply showing Gollumn's trip to Mordor and Aragorn's watch on him during that time.

Gollum is still going to be fully digital (I believe the comment was if it aint broke dont fix it) but they supposedly planned to take animatronics a step 10 years into the future like the the digital revolution of the past 10 years took digital and stop motion tech a big step forward. though they are planning for most things a combination of animatronic and digital effects- I'm assuming thats for the trolls and the dragon.

My daughter heard that they were going to fill in the blanks of Gandalfs missing frmo the party. IIRC, he was dealing with a necromancer. That could take up a whole film too.

IIRC the Necromancer was either the leader of the Nazgul or Sauron himself in disguise

Name two famous people who were shot in the back of the head while in a theater:

1> Abraham Lincoln
2> the guy sitting in front of Pee Wee Herman
